本文首先分析萧伯纳的幽默,其中包括他生活中的幽默以及戏剧作品中所体现出来的幽默。
而《皮革马利翁》作为萧伯纳最为出名的一部喜剧,对于萧伯纳幽默的研究具有一定的帮助。
本文认为萧伯纳的生活和作品是可以互相联系的,而作品主要又以人物为支点进行论述。
在《皮革马利翁》中,主要分析卖花女莉莎和垃圾工杜立托的幽默,并分析了其幽默所在。
除了人物的幽默,本文还进一步描写了《皮革马利翁》情节中所表现出来的幽默,并着重分析了其幽默成因,即关系准则和方式准则。
而这两个原则又与幽默密切相关,能够对萧伯纳戏剧幽默的研究提供一个新的视角和一定的理论依据。

ABSTRACT
ThispaperanalyzesthehumorofShawfirst,includinghisindividualhumorinhiseverydaylifeandthehumorouselementsappearedinhisdramas.PygmalionasthemostfamouscomedyofShaw,itcanofferpeoplealotofassiststothestudyofShavianhumor.Thepaperdeemsthattheauthor’slifeandhisworkscanbeconnectedcloselybyeachother,andtheplaysmainlyusesthecharacterasafulcrumtodiscuss.InPygmalion,itemphasizesthehumorofaflowergirlLizaandagarbagecollectorDoolittle,andanalyzesthehumorcausesfurther.Inadditiontothehumorofcharacters,thethesismainlyillustratesthehumorinplots,andalsoanalyzesthehumorcauses,namelyrelationmaximandmannermaxim.Inaddition,thetwoprinciplesarecloselyassociatedwithhumor,itcanprovideusanewangleandsomecertaintheoriestostudytheShavianhumorfurther.

GeorgeBernardShaw(1856-1950),borninDublin,Ireland.“Hewaspossiblythemostprolificofalltwenties-centryauthor”(Innesxvii).Besides,heisalsoregardedasthegreatestplaywriterinthehistoryofGreatBritainafterShakespear.Besides,BernardShawisnotonlyadistinguisheddramatist,butalsoheisaBritishnovelist,asocialactivist,literarycriticandjournalist.Hewritesfivenovelsduringhislifetime,includingCashelByron'
sProfession,AnUnsocialSocialist,LoveAmongtheArtists,TheIrrationalKnotandImmaturity.Althoughhisnovelsareunsuccessfulintheend,itdidnothitshisenthusiasmofwriting.Hecontinuedhiswritingcareerandtriedtowriteplayswhichultimatelygainsalotofpraiseforhimfromthepublic.EspeciallyPygmalion,isamonumentalworkintheater.Actually,mostplaysofhim,suchasMajorBarbara,MrsWarren’sProfessionandsoforth,hasgreatlyhelpedhimbuildhisreputationintheliterarycircle.Shawasanoutstandingrealisticdramatist,becameacorefigureinthe20thcenturytheatresoon.Meanwhile,“Hewasafreethinker,asupporterofwomen'
srights,andanadvocateofequalityofincome,theabolitionofprivateproperty,andaradicalchangeinthevotingsystem.HealsocampaignedforthesimplificationofspellingandpunctuationandthereformoftheEnglishalphabet”(Drabble923).Inaddition,IbsenhasagreatimpactontheplaywrightcareerofShaw,andthenShawwritesthebookofThequintessenceofIbsenwhichoccupiedthecrucialpositioninthetheatrehistoryofEurope.UnderthehugeinfluenceofIbsen,Shawfinallyknowthestrengthofdrama,itnotonlycansweepthefilthoftheBritishstage,andcanpourtheirdissatisfactionoutwiththedarknesssocialreality.
What’smore,BernardShawisaninexhaustiblewriter,andheoncesaid,“Myonelineofprogressisfromwritingstories,reviews,andarticles,moreandmoretowardswritingfullyandexhaustivelywhatIlike”(Collected229).Hewrites51playsintheaggregateduringhisactivelifetime,includingManandSuperman,AugustusDoesHisBitandsoon.AndalsoheisregardedasaplaywrightwhoownsthelongestliterarycareerinthestageofBritishdrama.ShawisalsobeenseenasthefounderofBritainmoderndrama,havingbroughtaboutagoodconditionsthatcandrawmoredramatiststowritefortheplay.Besides,Shawhasahealthylifestyleindeed,heisdefinitelyavegetarianinhislife,heneverdrinksalcohol,coffeeandtea.Evenattheageof94,hestillinsistsonwritingplaysuntilhediedin1950.
SomescholarshiptendstoapproachtheplayforsuchthematicconcernsasShawdrama’sabsurdfactors(ZhangShihong62).Shawusuallyexertssomecertainabsurddialogueorscenetoexposethecapitalism’snature.Themethodofdiversity(DuJuan36).actually,Shavianmosttheatersusestheirony,antithesisorothermethodstocreativedramas.Someresearchesdiscusshisplay’screativeartsandthedrama’sinfluencesinChina(WuXianze87).ShavianplayshasahugeinfluencesinearlyChina,lettheChinesepeoplehaveapreliminaryunderstandingofdrama.AndanotherresearchonShaw’screativeevolutiontheory(LiuYunyun108).Shavianplayshasthespiritofinnovation,andheproduceanewstyleoftheaterfromthoughtstoarts.Informedbyestablishedscholarship,thispaperundertakestostudythehumorofShaviansenseofhumorinPygmalion,ithasadetailedanalysisofhumorwhichcanhelpusachievingafurtherandoverallunderstandingofShawandhiseminentplays.
Thebodyofthisthesisconsistsofthreechapters.
AftertheIntroduction,ChapterOnegivesabriefintroductiontohumorandsomeinterestingstoriesofShawinhiseverydaylife.ChapterTwoisabouttwoamusingcharactersinPygmalion,LizaandDoolittle.Meanwhile,Ienumeratesomeentertainingscenesfromthedramatoshowthecharacter’shumorfully.ChapterThreedealswithsomeinterestingplotstoproveShavianhumorinMajorBarbaraandMrsWarren’sProfession.Thenwecometothelastpart,Conclusion.
I.ShavianHumor
Afamousplaywright,BernardShaw,isknowntohavepossessedgreatwitandawonderfulsenseofhumor.Heisnotonlyoptimistic,open-minded,butparticularlyadeptsatmasteringoflanguage,andunderthetitleofthemosthumorouswriterinthehistoryofEnglishliterature.Manyofhisplaysareforthrightattacksoncontemporarysocialproblemswithwearingironichumorwords,hebelievedthatifdramaistobesignificant,itmustleadtheaudiencestorightaction.Nevertheless,Shavianhumorousnotmerelyreflectedinhisdramas,moreextremelyoftenemergedinhislife.
1.1ABriefIntroductiontoHumor
“Humor,isthetendencyofparticularcognitiveexperiencetoprovokelaughtersandprovideamusement.ThetermderivesfromthehumoralmedicineoftheancientGreeks,whichtaughtthatthebalanceoffluidsinthehumanbody,knownashumorscontrolhumanhealthandemotion”(Nash119).Butnowthewordtotallyhasanotherexplanation,humorisdescribedassomethingabsurd,unexpected,andexpressedinawayofimplicitorledapersontolaughandendlessafterwards.Humorislikealubricantofinternationalcommunication,isanuniquewealthofhuman,italsocanshortenthedistanceoftheaudienceandplaywriter.
What’smore,peopleofallages,backgroundsandculturesrespondtohumor.Agreatmanyofpeopleareabletoexperiencehumor,i.e.,tobeamused,tolaughorsmileatsomethingreallyfunny,andthepersonwhomakesthemlaughareusuallyconsideredtohaveagoodsenseofhumor.However,humoriseffectedbysomeelementsmorethanpersonaltastes,includingcultural,externalenvironmentandlevelofeducationandsoforth.
Humorfrequentlybringsjoysaroundoureverydaylife,itcharacteristicswit,self-mockery,scoffandfun.Indeed,humorbenefitseliminatehostility,alleviatefriction,preventescalation,somearguethathumorcanalsostimulatemorale,improveproductionefficiency.“Humorisoneofthementalexperiences.Itmakespeoplelaughbytheexpressionsofwordsanddeeds,andenablespeopletofathomitsprofundity.Theeffecttopeopleiseitherlightsmileorbellylaughter”(LiJin207).
Inshort,humorcomesfromlife,itisalanguagemodalitythroughartisticprocessing;
anditisalsocreatedbyauthor,justlike“wehavenomorerighttoconsumehappinesswithoutproducingitthantoconsumewealthwithoutproducingit”(Complete204).Itisanartoflanguagetosomecertainextent.What’smore,it’satypeofartcancreateahostofliteraryworksofartwithlaughing.InShavianmostplays,particularlyhiscomedy,ironyisthecommonwaytoexpresssenseofhumor,itmaydependsmoreonunderstandingthetargetofthehumorandthustendstodrawmorematureaudiencestothinkingoftheheavyproblemsincurrentsocie
