Deepfunding(资金)cutstopublicschoolprogramsareforcingdistrictsaroundtheUStoreduceartseducation.ThePhiladelphiaschoolsystemisnoexception.Itsoncegreatmusicprogramhasbeenstrugglingbecausealargenumberoftheinstrumentsaredamaged,withnofundstorepairthem.Now,thanksto“SymphonyforaBrokenOrchestra,”aprojectheadedbyTempleContemporary,someofthewoundedinstrumentsarebeingbroughtbacktolife.
Theideacameaboutin2013whenTempleContemporaryDirectorRichardBlacksonwastouringoneofthe23Philadelphiaschoolsthathadbeenclosedthatyear.Amongtheitemsbeingcombinedfromalltheschoolswasaroomfullofbrokeninstruments.ThenBlacksoncarefullyexaminedeachwoundedinstrumentandfoundthat1,000ofthemwererepairable.
Tohelpraisefundsfortheproject,hereachedouttoPulitzer-andGrammy-winningcomposerDavidLang.“I’mcompletelyaproductofpublicschools.SowhenBlacksontoldmehehadwaystofixthese1,000instruments,myfirstthoughtwasthateachoneoftheseinstrumentswasanopportunitytochangethelifeofastudent,”saidLang.Themusiciancameupwiththesmartideaofwritingasymphonyspecificallyforthedamagedinstruments.
“SymphonyforaBrokenOrchestra”tookplaceinPhiladelphiaonDecember3,2017.Performedby400musicians,themelodiesprovedwhatbrokeninstrumentscoulddo.Theperformance,whichraisedmuch-neededfunds,didnotend.The“SymphonyforaBrokenOrchestra”projectcontinuesonlinewithadescriptionofallthebrokeninstruments.Peoplecansupporttheprogrambycontributingbetween$50and$200tohelpgettheinstrumentsrepaired.
Thankstothisproject,whichhasthusfarraisedover$237,000,Philadelphiastudentswillfindworkinginstrumentswhentheyreturntoschoolthisfall.Hopefully,thesuccessofthisunusualattemptwillencouragepublicschooldistrictsaroundthecountrytocomeupwithcreativewaystokeeptheirrapidly-disappearingartsprogramsalive.
