CarnegieHallisnamedafterAndrewCarnegie,whopaidforitsconstruction.Hewasawealthymanwhoalsogavealotofmoneytoschoolsandpubliclibraries.ConstructiononCarnegieHallbeganin1890andtheofficialopeningnightwasonMay5,1891.
ThehallwasownedbytheCarnegiefamilyuntil1924whenitwassoldtoRobertE.Simon.Thebuildingbecameveryoldandin1960,thenewownermadeplanstodestroyitandbuildanofficeblock.IsaacStemledagroupofpeoplewhofoughttosaveCarnegieHallandfinally,thecityofNewYorkboughtitfor$5million.Itwasthenfixedupbetween1983and1995.
