Introduction
Motioncontrol,initswidestsense,couldrelatetoanythingfromaweldingrobottothehydraulicsysteminamobilecrane.InthefieldofElectronicMotionControl,weareprimarilyconcernedwithsystemsfallingwithinalimitedpowerrange,typicallyuptoabout10HP(7KW),andrequiringprecisioninoneormoreaspects.Thismayinvolveaccuratecontrolofdistanceorspeed,veryoftenboth,andsometimesotherparameterssuchastorqueoraccelerationrate.Inthecaseofthetwoexamplesgiven,theweldingrobotrequiresprecisecontrolofbothspeedanddistance;
thecranehydraulicsystemusesthedriverasthefeedbacksystemsoitsaccuracyvarieswiththeskilloftheoperator.Thiswouldn’tbeconsideredamotioncontrolsysteminthestrictsenseoftheterm.Ourstandardmotioncontrolsystemconsistsofthreebasicelements:

Themotor.Thismaybeasteppermotor(eitherrotaryorlinear),aDCbrushmotororabrushlessservomotor.Themotorneedstobefittedwithsomekindoffeedbackdeviceunlessitisasteppermotor.
