ssoicalstrength.ThenovelcapturesthehorrorsoftheGreatDepressionandprobesintotheverynatureofequalityandjusticeinAmerica.Althoughitfollowsthemovementofthousandsofmenandwomenandthetransformationofanentirenation,TheGrapesofWrathisalsothestoryofoneOklahomafamily,theJoads,whoaredrivenofftheirhomesteadandforcedtotravelwesttothepromisedlandofCalifornia.OutoftheirtrialsandtheirrepeatedcollisionsagainstthehardrealitiesofanAmericadividedintoHavesandHave-Notsevolvesadramathatisintenselyhumanyetmajesticinitsscaleandmoralvision,elementalyetplainspoken,tragicbutultimatelystirringinitshumandignity.[1]
Inthismasterpiece,theauthornotonlyappliessomebiblicalstoriesanditsrelatedmoralideasinthethemeideas,butalsosuccessfullyborrowsBibleintheselectionofthetitlethatgivesthenoveldeepmetaphorandextensivesymbolism.Thebiblehasaprofoundimpactonthewesternliteratureandculture.QianWenxiainher‘ReconstructionofTheGardenofEden--DiscussionontheRedeemableConsciousnessofJohnSteinbeck’sTheGrapesofWrath’employsprototypetheoryastheoriginforanattempttostudythespecialexpressionoftheredeemableconsciousnessinTheGrapesofWrathwheretheauthortriestofindoutthecommoncharacteristicsofthesesalvation,savingfromothers,whichisbasedonthedifferenttypesofsalvationoftheJesusfortheNoah,Mosesandtheguiltylambs.Inthenovel,JimCasyisnarratedastheembodimentofChrist;

thenameofRoseofSharonwasoriginatedfrom‘Bible’,andherperformanceintheendofthenovelwascompletelytherepresentationofthespiritofChrist.Inthenovel,theapplicationofsomeallusionimageriessuchas:
‘grapes’,‘rain’,‘flood’,and‘snake’remindsthereaderofsomerelatedchaptersinthebible.

ChapterTwoIntroductiononJohnSteinbeckandTheGrapesofWrath
2.1IntroductiononJohnSteinbeck
JohnSteinbeckwastheforemostnovelistoftheAmericanDepressionofthe1930s.HewasborninSalinas,California,thelocaleofmuchofhisfinestfiction.Hissympathyforthemigrantworkersandthedown-trodden,soevidentinhiswriting,wastheresultoffirsthandknowledgeoftheirstruggles.Fromhisboyhoodhewasself-supporting;
heworkedasalabor,aseamanonacattle-boat,newspaperreporter,bricklayer,chemist’sassistant,surveyor,andmigratoryfruit-picker.Hiswritingreflectedhisconcernwiththeritualsofmanuallabor.
AftermarriageandamovetoPacificGrove,hepublishedtwoCaliforniabooks,ThePasturesofHeaven(1932)andToaGodUnknown(1933),andworkedonshortstorieslatercollectedinTheLongValley(1938).PopularsuccessandfinancialsecuritycameonlywithTortillaFlat(1935),storiesaboutMonterey’spaisanos.Aceaselessexperimenterthroughouthiscareer,Steinbeckchangedcoursesregularly.Threepowerfulnovelsofthelate1930sfocusedonCalifornialaboringclass:
InDubiousBattle(1936),OfMiceandMen(1937)andthebookconsideredbymanyhisfinest,TheGrapesofWrath(1939).TheGrapesofWrathwonboththeNationalBookAwardandThePulitzerPrizein1939.[11]
ThelastdecadesofhislifewerespentinNewYorkCityandSagHarborwithhisthirdwife,withwhomhetraveledwidely.LaterbooksincludeSweetThursday(1954),TheShortReignofPippinIV:
AFabrication(1957),OnceThereWasaWar(1958),TheWinterofOurDiscontent(1961),TravelswithCharleyinSearchofAmerica(1962),AmericaandAmericans(1966),andtheposthumouslypublishedJournalofaNovel:

SteinbeckreceivedtheNobelPrizeinLiteraturein1962,and,in1964,hewaspresentedwiththeUnitedStatesMedalofFreedombyPresidentLyndonB.Johnson.SteinbeckdiedinNewYorkin1968.Today,morethanthirtyyearsafterhisdeath,heremainsoneofAmerica'
sgreatestwritersandculturalfigures.RobertDeMott,editor,istheEdwinandRuthKennedyDistinguishedProfessoratOhioStateUniversityandauthorofSteinbeck’sTypewriter,anaward-winningbookofcriticalessays.[5]
2.2TheBackgroundofTheGrapesofWrath
The1920’swasadecadeoftenreferredtoa‘theroaringtwenties’;
atimewhensuccessfulbusinessmenwerenationalheroes,landvalueswereboomingandthehemsonwomen’sskirtsweregettingshorterthaneverbefore.ThiswasatimewhenthetraditionalvaluesofruralAmericawerechallenged-womenweregainingemployment,votinganddrivingcars.Itwasatimewhenanewtypeofurbancenterarose;
onebasedonproduction,industrialtechnologyandmassedpopulation.TheaverageAmericanwasbusybuyingautomobilesandhouseholdappliances,andspeculatinginthestockmarket,wherebigmoneycouldbemade.Thoseapplianceswereboughtoncredit,however,theimbalancebetweentherichandthepoor,with0.1percentofsocietyearningthesametotalincomeas42percent,combinedwithproductionofmoreandmoregoodsandrisingpersonaldebt,couldnotbesustained.[9]
OnBlackTuesday,29October1929,thestockmarketcrashed,triggeringtheGreatDepression,theworsteconomiccollapseinthehistoryofthemodernindustrialworld.ItspreadfromtheUnitedStatestotherestoftheworld,lastingfromtheendof1929untiltheearly1940s.Banksfailed,businessesclosed,andmorethan15millionAmericans(one-quarteroftheworkforce)becameunemployed.
Yetthedepressionwasnottheonlydisastertostrike–sotoodidthemostdevastatingweathereventinAmericanhistory.Thedroughthitfirstintheeasternpartofthecountryin1930,movingtowardthewestin1931,turningtheGreatPlainsintoadesertby1934andpeakinginthesummerof1936settinghightemperaturerecords.MostsignificantlyaffectedwerethefarmingstatesofNorthernTexas,Oklahoma,Kansas,andNebraska(anareawhichwastobecomeknownastheDustBowl)withirregular,dry,hotweather.Farmfieldswereturnedtodustasthedrysoilwasliftedbythewindcausingregularduststorms.
Whenthedroughtandduststormsshowednosignsoflettingup,manypeopleabandonedtheirland.Otherswouldhavestayedbutwereforcedoutwhentheylosttheirlandinbankforeclosures.Leftwithnothing,theyweredriventofindhopeforabetterlife,travelingfromolder,droughtstrickeneasternstatestotherichandabundantwesternstateofsunnyCalifornia(‘thelandofmilkandhoney’).Inall,one-quarterofthepopulationleft,packingeverythingtheyownedintotheircarsandtrucks,andheadedwestinanexoduswhichrepresentsthelargestmigrationinAmericanhistory.By1940,2.5millionpeoplehadmovedoutofthePlainsstates;
ofthose,200000movedtoCalifornia.[2]
2.3TheSummaryoftheNovel
ReleasedfromanOklahomastateprisonafterservingfouryearsforamanslaughterconviction,TomJoadmakeshiswaybacktohisfamily’sfarminOklahoma.HemeetsJimCasy,aformerpreacherwhohasgivenuphiscallingoutofabeliefthatalllifeisholy.JimaccompaniesTomtohishome,onlytofindit—andallthesurroundingfarms—deserted.Thenextmorning,TomandJimsetoutforTom’sUncleJohn’s.Uponarrival,TomfindsMaandPaJoadpackingupthefamily’sfewpossessions.Havingseenhandbillsadvertisingfruit-pickingjobsinCalifornia,theyenvisionthetriptoCaliforniaastheironlyhopeofgettingtheirlivesbackontrack.
ThejourneytoCaliforniainaricketyusedtruckislongandarduous.Dilapidatedcarsandtrucks,loadeddownwithscrappypossessions,clogHighway66:
itseemstheentirecountryisinflighttothePromisedLandofCalifornia.
TheJoadsmeetwithmuchhostilityinCalifornia.Thecampsareovercrowdedandfullofstarvingmigrants,whoareoftennastytoeachother.Thelocalsarefearfulandangryatthefloodofnewcomers,whomtheyderisivelylabel“Okies.”Whilestayinginaramshacklecampknownasa“Hooverville,”Tomandseveralmengetintoaheatedargumentwithadeputysheriffoverwhetherworkersshouldorganizeintoaunion.Whentheargumentturnsviolent,JimCasyknocksthesheriffunconsciousandisarrested.PoliceofficersarriveandannouncetheirintentiontoburntheHoovervilletotheground.
Still,aspleasantaslifeinthegovernmentcampis,theJoadscannotsurvivewithoutsteadywork,andtheyhavetomoveon.Theyfindemploymentpickingfruit,butsoonlearnthattheyareearningadecentwageonlybecausetheyhavebeenhiredtobreakaworkers’strike.TomrunsintoJimCasywho,afterbeingreleasedfromjail,hasbegunorganizingworkers;
