Inthischapterwewillgiveanoverviewofourfirstpersonpuzzle-platformgame.Wewillexplainthegamemechanicsindetailandthegeneralscopeoftheproject.
Wepresentafirstpersoncontrolledgamewithadventureandjumpandrunelements.YouareplayingaSGhistorianwhowantstogetbackhistrophies.Littlemonstersstoleitfromhim,andtheyplacedthemonhightowers.Togetthereyouareabletoshootplatformsintheskyandwalkonthem.Totrapenemiesyoucanlurethemonplatformsandthedestroytheonebehindthemsotheyaretrapped.
Thesearethemainfeaturesofourgame:

Ourgenrecanbedescribedasfirstpersonpuzzle-platformgame.Weareinspiredbygameslike“Portal”or“Minecraft”.Whilethecontrolsarethesameasinafirstpersonshooter,youareactuallynotabletoshootandkillenemies.
Wetargetabigaudience,everybodyfrom6-99yearsold,menandwomen.Ourgamehasnoviolenceorverycomplicatedmechanicsthatareonlysuitableforanolderaudience.Alsothegoalistocreatepuzzlesthatareinterestingforeveryagegroup.
Theplayerseesthroughtheeyesofthecharacterheisplaying.Adotinthecenteroftheframeshowswhereheisaiming.Hisgunisalwaysinthepictureandhecanseehisbodyifhelooksdown.Hecanlookaroundbyusingthemouse.Hecanwalkandjump.Heuseshisguntoshootaplatform.Theplatformgetscreatedimmediately.Todestroyanexistingplatform,hecanalsousethesamegun.Hecanonlycreateconnectingplatforms,soshootingaplatformisonlypossibleinanadjacentareaofanexistingplatform.Hecandestroyeveryplatform,butdestroyingaplatformtakes0.5second.
Thegoalisalwaystocreateawaytothegoalplatformwiththetrophies.Theenemieshindertheplayertoreachthatgoal,sohehastotrapthemonplatformsanddestroytheconnectiontohimself.
Wewanttocreateafriendlyandcolorfulatmosphere.Ourlevelsaresituatedinthesky,sothemaincolorswillbewhiteandbluefromthecloudsandheaven.Wetrytocreateallthemodelsinacolorfulandsimpleway.Stilltherenderingisphotorealistic.Wecanachievethisbyrealisticlightingandnormalmapstoaddmoredetailtothe3D-assets.
Inthischapterwewillexplainthescopeofourgame.Wewillexplainindetailthenumbersofassetsthatarenecessaryandshowthegamesizeweareaimingfor.
1.7.1.Numberoflocations
Therewillbeonemainlocationwhichisthesky.Wewantthewholegametobebasedonthatlocation.Insidethissetwewillhavemultiplelevels.

Wewanttocreate5levels.Eachlevelcanbeplayedwhentheprecedinglevelissolved.Thegoalofeverylevelistogetoneofthe5trophiesback.Witheverylevelthedifficultyofgettingthetrophywillincrease.
1.7.3.NumberofNPC’s
Wehaveonetypeofenemy,alittlemonster.Thistypeofenemywilloccurineverylevel,thenumberofenemieswillincreasewhilethegameprogresses:

Throughoutthewholegame,theplayerwillbeabletouseoneweapon.Webelievethatthissingleweapongivestheplayermultipleoptionstosolvepuzzles.Also,itsmechanicisnewtovideogames,soitwillbeinterestingenoughtouseonlythisoneweaponforthethewholegame.
Withourgame,wewanttocreatefunbydifferenttechniqueslikechallenge,sensation,fantasyandabitofexpression.Difficultpuzzlesarecreatedforchallengewhilesensationiscreatedbygettinghuntedbytheenemies.Fantasywillbecreatedbyourfantasticgameworldtoelevatetheleveloffunandtheplayercanevenexpresshimselfbycreating“drawings”ofplatformsinthesky.Inthischapterwewillexplainthegameplayandthemechanicsinmoredetailtogiveanoverviewofhowwewanttocreateafunexperiencewithourgame.
Thebiggoalofthegameistogetbackallthetrophies.Inthefollowing,wewillexplainthegameplaystartingfromthebigpicture,thegameprogressionandfinallygoingtothesmallesttasksinthegame.
2.1.1.GameProgression
Thegamehas5levels.Whenthegamestarts,youwillenterthemenu.Youwillsee5platformsinthemenu,butonlythefirstoneischoosable.Youwillstartplayingonceyouclickonthefirstplatformandgettothefirstlevel.Ifyousolvethelevel,youwillgetbacktothemenuandatrophyisshownonthefirstplatform.Nexttothetrophyyouwillalsoseethescoreyouachievedinthelevel.Thenyoucanchooseleveltwoandsoon.Onceyoufinishedalevelyoucanalsoplayitagainifyouwanttoachieveabetterscore.Whenallthelevelsarecompleted,youwillhaveatrophyoneveryplatforminthemenu.Dependingonthetimewewillendthegamewithacutsceneshowingourhappymaincharacterwithhistrophies.
Ineverymissionyouwillstartononesingleplatform.Thereisagoalplatformthatisclearlyvisibleandthereareotherelementsliketheenemies.Insomelevelsthereisacagearoundthetrophyonthegoalplatform.Soifyouwanttoreachit,youneedtodestroythecage.
Onceyoucollectedthetrophyyouwillgetyourscoreforthelevel.Thepurposeofthescoreistomotivatetheplayertoplayinacertainmannerandmakehimplaylevelsmultipletimestoachieveahigherscore.Directlyaftercollectingthetrophyyouwillseethescoreandhowitiscalculated.
Toreachaplatform,youcanshootplatformsintheskytocreateapath.Youcanwalkonit,buttheenemiescandosoaswell.Iftheyreachyou,theywillattackyouandkickyouofftheplatforms.Ifyoufalldown,youwillrestartthelevel.Tosurviveandreachyourgoals,youcanluretheenemiesbycreatingapathfromtheirplatformtoyours.Assoonastheystartrunninginyourdirection,youcandestroythebridge,andshortlyafterwards,destroytheplatformsbehindthem.Inthisway,theywillbetrappedandtheycannotgoanywhere.Youcanalsodestroytheplatformunderneaththeenemiesandtheywillfalldown.Butifoneenemyfallsdown,twonewenemieswillrespawnatthestartingpoint.Soifyouwanttogetthetrophyeasier,youhavetotraptheenemiesinsteadofmakingthemfall.Therearealsoenemiesonhigherplatforms.Ifthereisaplatformcloseunderneaththem,theywilljumpdownandattack.
Ifthereisacagearoundthetrophyonthegoalplatform,youwillseealineofenergygoingtoageneratorplatform.Youcandestroythecagebyconnectingthegeneratorplatformandthegoalplatform(byshootingotherplatforms).Inotherlevelstherewillbemultiplegeneratorplatformslikethis.Thelineofenergyshowshowtheyneedtobeconnectedtodestroythecagearoundthetrophy.Inchapter4.Levels,youwillseepicturesillustratingtheconcept.
Inthischapterwewillexplaintherulestoourgame.
Ingeneralthegamewillhaverealisticphysics.Ifyouarenotstandingonaplatform,youwillfalldown.Platformscanflyalthoughtheyarenotconnectedtotheground.Theseplatformsaretheonlyelementthatisexcludedfromtherealworldphysics.Aswehavesetourgameinafantasticenvironment,webelievethismixofrealisticandfantasticelementsmakessenseforourgame.
