In1855GovernorIsaacStevensofWashingtonTerritoryinvitedtheNezPercetoapeaceconference.Hesaidtherewereagreatmanywhitepeopleinthecountry,andmanymorewouldcome.Butthechiefofthetribeatthattime,OldJoseph,replied,“Takeawayyourpaper.Iwillnottouchitwithmyhand.”
Thingswerequietforawhileafterthat,butnotforlong.WhenOldJosephdied,thechiefshipwaspassedontoYoungJoseph.Inthelate1870s,governmentofficialscametoordertheNezPercetoleavetheWallowaValleyandthenbeganhardbattlesbetweentheNezPerceandthewhitesoldiers.Afterthetribehadfoughtthirteenbattlesandmoved1,600milestowardsCanadainanattempttoretreat(撤退)north,YoungJoseph,gaveintotheUnitedStatesArmy.Herewashisfamousstatement,“Hearmemychiefs.Iamtired;
