topics.Instead,thecomputerwillpresentanargumentforyoutoanalyze.The"
taskpresentsadifferentchallengefromthatofthe"

itrequiresyoutocritiqueagivenargumentbydiscussinghowwellreasonedyoufindit.Youwillneedtoconsiderthelogicalsoundnessoftheargumentratherthantoagreeordisagreewiththepositionitpresents.
Thus,thetwotasksarecomplementaryinthatonerequiresyoutoconstructyourownargumentbytakingapositionandprovidingevidencesupportingyourviewsontheissue,whereastheotherrequiresyoutocritiquesomeoneelse'

HowtheTestIsScored
Eachessayisholisticallyscoredona6-pointscaleaccordingtothecriteriaindicatedintheGREWritingAssessmentscoringguides.Holisticscoringmeansthateachessayisjudgedasawhole:
readersdonotseparatetheessayintocomponentpartsandawardacertainnumberofpointsforaparticularcriterionorelementsuchasorganization,sentencestructure,orlanguage.Instead,readersassignscoresbasedonthetotalqualityoftheessay,consideringallofitscharacteristicsinanintegratedway.Excellentorganizationorpoororganization,forexample,willbepartofthereaders'
overallimpressionofthewritingandwillthereforecontributetothescore,butorganization,asadistinctfeature,hasnospecificweight.
GREreadersarecollegeanduniversityfacultyexperiencedinteachingwritingorwriting-intensivecourses.AllGREreadershaveundergonecarefultraining,passedstringentGREqualifyingtests,anddemonstratedthattheyareabletomaintainahighdegreeofscoringaccuracy.
Toensurefairnessandobjectivityinscoring
