Abstract
JaneAustenisoneofthefewnovelistsinworldliteraturewhoisregardedas“classic”andiswidelyread.Shehascompletedsixclassicalnovelsinallherlifetime,inwhichSenseandSensibilityisoneofthem.StudiesonSenseandSensibilityarenumerous.Inthenovel,Austen’sviewaboutmarriage,herattitudetowardsenseandsensibility,theapplicationoffeminismcriticisminherworksarewidelystudiedbyscholarsathomeandabroad.Whilefewpeoplestudyherwritingstylefromtheharmonyperspective,thenIwillhaveatry.
Writers’uniqeperspectiveandwritingstyleisthecoreofthework.Therearemanysketchfiguresandcartoonfiguresinthenovel,theyaresidebyside,eachdoingitsmagic,andformedanatmospherefullofcomicstylepainting.Thewritingskillsmakethereadershavedifferentreactionsinherdifferentdescriptionsofdifferentcharactersandlearnaboutthemeasily.AndJane
Austenuseddifferentconversationstoestablishcharacters’imageanddidwellinutilizingthedifferentmotivesandunderstandingsbetweenspeakers,listenersandreaders.Basedonthis,theconversationisfullofmeaning,individualityandvividness,asaresult,satisfypeople’sthought.Byusingtheseskills,Jane

Austen(1775—1817)wasbornatStevensoninHants,theseventhchildofRevd·
GeorgeAustenandCassandraLeigh.Herparentswereknowledgeableandconsiderate,herbrothersandsistersgotalongverywellwitheachother.Livinginthisharmoniousfamily,Austen’sattitudetowardsthesocietywasaffirmativeandoptimistic.Sheinsistedonthefamilyformthatmenworkoutsidewhilewomenstayinthehouse.Shethoughtthatwomenshouldplayanimportantroleintheirfamilies,thatis,toeducatethefamilymemberswiththeirsavoir-vivrebecauseanindividual’ssavoir-vivreisgoodtothestabilityofthewholesociety.
AsoneofthefewdistinguishedEnglishwomennovelistsofthe19thcentury,JaneAustenwrotesixcompleteclassicalnovelsinallherlifetime:
SenseandSensibility,PrideandPrejudice,MansfieldPark,Emma,NorthangerAbbyandPersuasion.SenseandSensibilityisthefirstnovelofJaneAusten,manyreadersarealwaysentertainedbyitsintriguinglovestory,interestingcharactersandsubtlehumorwhileseriouscriticismshavebeenconductedfromvariousaspects,suchasloveandmarriage,moneyandclass,ironyandsatire,characterizationanddialogueetc.ZhuHong,apioneerscholartostudyAusteninChina,publishedanarticlein1982,OnAusten’sPrideandPrejudiceinReading,appealingtothepublictogiveupthebiasandmakefairjudgmenttowardsAusten.Thearticlementioned“Inthelongtime,AustenandherworkswereexcludedfromTheCollectionofForeignClassicBooks”.In1985,ZhuHongtranslatedandeditedtheStudyofJaneAusten,openingawindowforChinesescholarstounderstandandstudyJaneAusten.Inrecentyears,people’senthusiasmtostudyAustenwasconstantlyincreasing;
therelativepapersreachtomorethan50.TheoveralltendencyinthisperiodwastomakenewanalysesandexplanationstowardsAusten’sworksonthebasisofcarefultextreadinganddeepmaterialexploration.AnoutstandingcharacteristiconAusten’sresearchatthattimewasdiverseresearchtheoriesandresearchvisionsfromdifferentperspectives.
Inthenovel,Austen’sviewaboutmarriage,herattitudetowardsenseandsensibility,theapplicationoffeminismcriticisminherworksarewidelystudiedbyscholarsathomeandabroad.Whilefewpeoplestudyherwritingstylefromtheharmonyperspective,thenIwillhaveatry.Byanalyzingtheharmonyofsenseandsensibility,harmonyofstructurelayout,wecanappreciatethecharmofhernovelsandbeattractedbyit.
Thethesisconsistsofthreechapters.ChapteroneisabouttheoriginsofJane
Austen’swritingstyle.Socialbackground,family,herpersonalcausearethefoundationalelementstoformherwritingstyle.Chaptertwoisaboutthewritingskills,portrayalofcharactersandmanyconversations,toappreciateherlanguagestyle.Chapterthreeisabouttheobjectiveofherwritingstyle,notonlytheharmonyofsenseandsensibility,butalsoharmonyofstructurelayout.
1.TheOriginsof
Austen’sWritingStyle
1.1SocialBackground
Intheeighteenth—centuryEngland,therewasnocentrally—organizedsystemofstate—supportededucation.Womenwereparticularlyexcludedfromattendingthepublicschoolsoruniversities.Traditionaleducationofladiesofthe‘genteel’classestooktheacquisitionofaccomplishmentsandmannersthefirstplace.Women’sdomesticeducationwastoreceiveapracticaltraining,suchasdoingsomesewingorneedlework,tomeettheirdomesticrole.Moreover,thenon-dornesticeducationwasoftentheacquisitionofaccomplishmentssuchaspiano-playing,drawing,singing,dancingorspeakingmodernlanguages,generallyFrenchandItalian.Thepurposeofacquiringsuchaccomplishmentswasonlytoincreasetheattractivenessinhusband-hunting,sothattheseskillsthentendedtobeneglectedaftermarriage,aswasshowninJaneAusten’sSenseandSensibility,LadyMiddleton“hadcelebratedhermarriagebygivingupmusic,althoughbyhermother’saccountshehadplayedextremelywell,andbyherownwasveryfondof”(Austen,1995:
39).
InAusten’stimes,youngwomencouldfindnowaytostrikeoutontheirownorbeindependentbuttotakeeverychanceofmarryingamanwithsocialstatusandlargeproperties.Havingnoaccesstoschoolsoruniversitiesforpropereducationandbeingexcludedfromanylegalrightsinpolitics,youngwomenfoundnoopportunitiesforprofessionalcareersofotherwaysforself-support.Moreover,theproblemsoftheentailsystem,inwhichtheeldestsonorotherseniormalerelativeiftherewerenoson,wasselectedtoinherittheproperty,puttheunmarriedyoungwomeninthedangerofbeingdestituteandhomelessupontheirfather’sdeath.Theyhadtoeitherlivewiththeirrelativesasa“dependant”ortobeagovernessorteacher,orhired“lady’scompanion”forliving.Theywereinstructedtobethe“AngelintheHouse”(Woolf,1923:
l68).Theironlywayofchangingthestatusquowastomarryrichmen.Butaftertheiraccomplishmentofpursuingmarriage,theywerenotprotectedbylaw.Onlymencouldabandontheirwivesbutwomenhadnochancetochoosetheirtruelove.Inherlife,shewasnotmarried,becauseshedidnothavetheprefectloverassheexpected.Jane
