AbstractWiththewidespreadapplicationofbusinessEnglish,businessEnglishspeechalsoreceivesmoreandmoreattention.BusinessEnglishspeechnotonlyreflectsthespeakersspeechstyleandskills,butalsocontainsdifferentlanguageanalysisandinterpersonalfunctionsignificance.BasedonHallidaysinterpersonalfunctiontheory,andcombinedwithotherscholars’pointsofviewabouttheinterpersonalfunction,suchaspersonalpronoun,thisstudyaimstomakeinterpersonalfunctionanalysisofpresidentObama’sspeechatPresidentialSummitonEntrepreneurshipheldinRonaldReaganbuildinginternationaltradecenter,Washington,D.C.onApril26,2010.Undertheanalysisofmood,modality,personalpronoun,threeaspects,thispapertendstorevealhowthespeakerchoosesappropriateinterpersonalexpressionmeanstoconveyhisownattitudeandpointofviewtotheaudienceandhowtoplaytheinterpersonalfunctionofthespeechsoastoachievethepurposeofthespeechandmakethebusinessactivitymoresuccessful.

1.1PresentSituationoftheStudyonInterpersonalFunctionofEnglishspeeches
Sincethe21stcentury,withthegrowthofeconomicglobalizationandtheinternationalizationofthecompanies,businessEnglishhasbecomethemostimportantcommunicationtoolforthosecompaniestocompetewithothersinordertohaveaseatinmarketshare.PeoplepaymoreandmoreattentiontotheimprovementofEnglishcommunicationskills,amongthem,thebusinessEnglishspeechhasattractedmoreattention.Inordertoexpressthespeaker’sattitudeandopinionstotheaudiencedirectlyandefficiently,moreandmorepeoplenoticetheinterpersonalfunctionofbusinessEnglishspeechandmakelotsofresearchesonit.
However,allthoseresearchesfocusmoreontheinterpersonalfunctionofpoliticalspeeches.Forexample,CaiJingjingdiscussedthepoliticianMr.ObamahowtofulfilltheinterpersonalfunctioninhispresidentialvictoryspeechonNovember7,2012.WangXueexploredinterpersonalsignificanceofChurchillsfamouspoliticalspeech“Blood,Tears,andSweat”.AsbusinessEnglishissoimportantforthedevelopmentofeconomy,peopleneedtoprobeintotheinterpersonalfunctionofbusinessEnglishspeechsoastohelpthespeakerachievehisspeechpurpose.
1.2PurposeoftheStudy
Thisstudyaimstodrawpeople’sattentiontotheinterpersonalfunctionofbusinessEnglishspeech,togetageneralknowledgeoftheinterpersonalfunctionofbusinessEnglishspeech,thustellreaderhowtochooseappropriateinterpersonalexpressionmeanstoconveyhisownattitudeandpointofviewtotheaudienceandhowtoplaytheinterpersonalfunctionofthespeechunderHallidaystheoryofinterpersonalfunctionwithacasestudyofPresidentObama’sSpeechatPresidentialSummitonEntrepreneurship.
1.3Outlineofthestudy
BasedonHallidaysinterpersonalfunctiontheory,andcombiningwiththeviewofpersonalpronounofLiZhanzi,thisstudyaimstomakeinterpersonalfunctionanalysisofpresidentObama’sspeechatPresidentialSummitonEntrepreneurshipheldinRonaldReaganbuildinginternationaltradecenter,Washington,D.C.onApril26,2010.
Firstofall,itisthemood,whichcanbedividedintotheindicativemood,the
imperativemoodandtheinterrogativemood,servesfordifferentspeechfunctionslikefunctionofinformationtransfer,functionofemphasisandfunctionofquestionrespectively.Secondly,itisthemodality.Withtheuseof“will”,“can”,“could”,and“may”,Mr.Obamadelivershisattitudetotheaudiencefrankly.Lastbutnotleast,itisthepersonalpronounlike“I”,“YOU”,“WE”andsoon,whichperformdominantfunction,functionofshorteningdistanceandresonantfunctionrespectively.
ThisstudytendstorevealhowMr.ObamafulfillstheinterpersonalfunctionofhisbusinessEnglishspeechanddiscovertheimportanceofmasteringthoseinterpersonalfunctionsforachievingthepurposeofthespeechandmakingthebusinessactivitymoresuccessful.
2.LiteratureReview
2.1HallidaysTheoryofInterpersonalFunction
ThesystemicfunctionalgrammarcreatedbyHallidayhasbecomeatheoreticalframeworkforotherresearcherstomakediscourseanalysis.Hallidaybelievedthatlanguagehadthreemetafunctions,whichconsistedofideationalfunction,interpersonalfunctionandtextualfunction.Interpersonalfunctionreferredtopeopleuselanguagetocommunicatewithothers,toestablishandmaintainrelationshipswithotherpeople,andtoinfluencepeople’sbehavior.Atthesametime,peoplealsoexpressedtheviewoftheworldsothatevenchangetheworldthroughlanguage.Interpersonalfunctionmeansthereisinterpersonalinteractionandmutualinfluenceduringcommunication.Hallidayestablishedtheinterpersonalmeaningsystemincludingmood,modality,polarity,andvocabularyoftablemanner.Hallidaythoughtthatthemoodsystemandthemodalitysystemwerethekeytorealizeinterpersonalfunction.
