Reengineeringforserviceorientedarchitectures:
Astrategicdecisionmodelforintegrationversusmigration
ServiceOrientedArchitecture(SOA)isapopularparadigmatpresentbecauseitprovidesastandards-basedconceptualframeworkforflexibleandadaptableenterprisewidesystems.ThisimpliesthatmostpresentsystemsneedtobereengineeredtobecomeSOAcompliant.However,SOAreengineeringprojectsraiseseriousstrategicaswellastechnicalquestionsthatrequiremanagementoversight.Thispaper,basedonpracticalexperiencewithSOAprojects,presentsadecisionmodelforSOAreengineeringprojectsthatcombinesstrategicandtechnicalfactorswithcost-benefitanalysisforintegrationversusmigrationdecisions.ThepaperidentifiesthekeyissuesthatneedtobeaddressedinenterpriseapplicationreengineeringprojectsforSOA,examinesthestrategicalternatives,explainshowthealternativescanbeevaluatedbasedonarchitecturalandcost-benefitconsiderationsandillustratesthemainideasthroughadetailedcasestudy.
