3.Hypotheses
(a).ThereisasignificantrelationshipbetweenGuangdongUniversityofTechnologystudents’gastrointestinalproblemsandtheiracademicperformance.
(b).ThereisnosignificantrelationshipbetweenGuangdongUniversityofTechnologystudents’gastrointestinalproblemsandtheiracademicperformance.
4.Scopeandlimitationsofthestudy
ThisresearchwillonlycentreupontheGuangdongUniversityofTechnologystudentsonthetopic—GuangdongUniversityofTechnologystudents’gastrointestinalproblem.Respondentsofthestudywillincludethefreshman,thesophomore,thejuniorandtheseniorstudentsagedfrom18-23ofForeignLanguageDepartmentofGuangdongUniversityofTechnology.
5.Importanceandsignificanceofthestudy
InGuangdongUniversityofTechnology,agreatquantityofstudentsarebeingattackedbygastrointestinalproblemsbutnotmassofthemareawareoftherelationshipbetweentheirgastrointestinalproblemsandtheiracademicperformance.Sotheimportanceistomakethempaymoreattentiontotherelationshipandbecomecognitiveofit.
Aftertheygetsomeknowledgeofthisresearchpaper,theycanaccordinglydealwiththerelationshipbetweentheirgastrointestinalproblemsandtheiracademicperformancemoreeffectivelyandlessentheharmtotheiracademicperformance.That’swherethesignificancelies.
LITERATUREREVIEW
Manyyearsago,severalresearchesandexperimentshavebeencarriedouttounderstandtherelationshipbetweenstudents’gastrointestinalproblemsandtheiracademicperformanceandprecisely,thestresscomingfromtheiracademicperformance.OnefamousexperimentisthestoryofTom.Tomhadinjuredhisesophaguscompletelywhenhewasachild,andthatendedhimhavingagastricfistula.ScientistshavetakentheopportunityandstudiedthegastrointestinalreactionstostressonTom'
sgut.
Theyreportedthefollowingchangesonhisstomachwhilehewasemotionallystressedbyhisacademicperformanceinschool:
1-stomachmembranebecamedeeplyredduetorapidinfluxofblood,2-smallulcersdevelopedonthesurface.Majoreffectsofstresscomingfromacademicperformancehavebeennoticed—whenthestressisbecominghigherandhigher,thegastrointestinalsystemwillgetsomethingwrong,whichwillinreturninfluencetheacademicperformance.
InastudypostedinstressmanagementonSeptember7th,2010,theyalsoshowedthesignificantrelationshipbetweencollegestudents’gastrointestinalproblemsandtheiracademicperformance.Gastrointestinalproblemsarecommonproblemsthatgetassociatedwithstresscomingfromacademicperformance.Within300studentshalfmaleandhalffemale,25%gotgastrointestinalproblems.Almostthreequartersofthemaregirlswhoareusuallymuchtenserthanboysintermsofacademicperformance.Eachtimetheyhavetogiveapresentationonstudy,theymightbeaccustomedtofeelingthebutterfliesintheirstomachandmightdopresentationnotperfectlyenoughastheprediction.Ormaybethey’repronetogettingulcersintheirstomachwhenthingsseemtobegettingtough.Theseinstancesshouldshowushowtheemotionsareintrinsicallyconnectedtoourgastrointestinalhealth.Simplyput,whenthegastrointestinalproblemsgetworse,theiracademicperformancewillbeaffectedbadly.
Accordingtosomeresearchers,stress,notonlycomingfromacademicperformancebuteveryaspectoflifemightactuallybecapableofexcitingcertainareasofthebrainandthesearetheareaswhichareresponsibleforthepainreceptorsinourbody;
andtheyendupactivatingthepainreceptorsthatareplacedintheesophagus,makingthemmoresensitivethantheyactuallyare.Thiswouldmeanthattheacidlevelsamongthestressedandnon-stressedpeoplewouldremainthesame;
buttheywouldjustmakeeverydropofacidinthestressedman’sbodycountforthatmuchmorepain.Onceapersonisstressed,thelevelsofthehormoneprostaglandinsisalsosaidtobelowered.Thisisthesubstancewhichhelpsinprotectingtheouterliningofthestomachfromacid.Similarly,oncetheyfeelthepain,howcantheyconcentrateontheirstudy?
Inourstudy,wewentalittlefurtherandtriedtoseeifthereisasignificantrelationshipbetweenGuangdongUniversityofTechnologystudents’gastrointestinalproblemsandtheiracademicperformance.Wegaverespondentsapieceofquestionnairewheretheyhadtoanswersomequestionsrelatedtothegastrointestinalproblemsandtheiracademicperformance.Thisreflectedtheirlifestyleandstudybehavior.Andwealsocontainsomeknowledgeaboutdealingwellwiththerelationshipbetweentwoobjects.
MOTHODOLOGY
Participants
Participantswerecomposedof120GuangdongUniversityofTechnologyforeignlanguageschoolstudentsfromfourdifferentgrades(freshman,sophomore,juniorandsenior),60maleand60female.WeselectedtheparticipantsfromJapanese,English(tradeandeconomy)andEnglish(translation)classesonastrictlyvolunteerbasis.
Materials
Plainwhitepaperusedtoprintthequestionnairewedesignedwasgiventoparticipants.Therewere11questionswithoptionsonthequestionnaire.Fromthequestionnaire,wecanknowsomethingaboutparticipants’diethabits,academicperformancepressure,generalinformationandviewsontherelationshipbetweengastrointestinalproblemandacademicperformance.
DesignandProcedure
Thequestionnairewasdesignedtoinvestigatetherelationshipbetweencollegestudents’gastrointestinalproblemandtheiracademicperformance.Wehypothesized,thattherewasasignificantrelationshipbetweencollegestudents’gastrointestinalproblemandtheiracademicperformance.
Thesurveybeganwithusgoingtothelibraryandreadingrelevantmaterialinthelibrary.Wealsosearchedapplicableresourceonline.Aftercollectedmassofresource,weframedourquestionnairewhichhad11questionswithappropriateandreasonableoptions.Everythinggotprepared,wepublishedourquestionnaireonline,andmeanwhile,wehandedoutourquestionnairetoourschoolmates.Wehonestlyaskedourschoolmatestofinishourquestionnairepaper,andthenwerecollectedourquestionnairesback.
