rcodeinbothMATLABandFortrantoperformsim-ulationanddesignwiththesemodels.Involvementwiththemodelsanddesignswilldemonstratemanyideasinsimulation,controltheory,computer-aideddesigntech-niques,andnumericalalgorithms.Thedesignexamplesareeasilyreproducible,andofferagreatdealofscopetoaclassofstudents.Beforestartingfeedbackcontroldesignwehavereviewedlinearsystemstheory,includingtheLaplacetransform,transferfunctions,andthestate-spaceformula-tion.Transformtheoryviewsdynamicsystemsthroughtheirpolesandzerosandleadstomanyconvenientgraphicalandback-of-the-envelopedesigntechniques,whilestate-spacetechniquesareideallysuitedtocomputer-aideddesign.Wehaveattemptedtopass“seamlessly”betweenthetwoformulations.Classicalcontroldesignisillustratedthroughmanyexamplesperformedontheaircraftmodelsusingtransformdomaintechniquessupportedbyanunderlyingstate-spacemodel.Moderndesigninthelaterchapterssimplyusesthestate-spacemodels.Finally,wenotethatthechoiceoftopicshereinisinfluencedbyourexperienceinthebroaderareaofguidance,navigation,andcontrol(GNC).Veryfewengineersenteringtheaerospaceindustrywillfindthemselvesdesigningflightcontrolsystems,andthosefewwilltakepartinthedesignofonlytwoorthreesuchsystemsintheircareers.Instead,theywillfindthemselvesinvolvedinabroadspectrumofprojects,whereagoodgraspofclassicalmechanics,dynamics,coordinatetransformations,geodesy,andnavigationwillbeinvaluable.Theimportanceofmodelingandsimula-tioncannotbeoverstated.Largesumsofmoneyarespentonmathematicalmodelinganddigitalsimulationbeforeanyhardwareisbuilt.ThefirstandthirdauthorswishtoacknowledgethehelpofcolleaguesinAerospaceEngineeringatGeorgiaTech.Prof.C.V.SmithprovidedinvaluablehelpwithChapter1duringmanyhoursofinterestingdiscussion.ThecomputersupportofB.H.HudsonattheGeorgiaTechResearchInstituteisalsogratefullyacknowledged.BothauthorswishtothankthestaffofJohnWiley&@#@Sonsfortheirpainstakingpreparationofthemanuscript.BrianL.StevensGeorgiaInstitut
