21VenDrAnoja21stCenturyWorldandHumanisticBuddhism21stCenturyWorldandHumanisticBuddhismVen.DrAnojaPresidentBLIANepalChapterKathmanduIntroduction21stCenturyWorldischaracterizedbyextremitiesandcomplexitiesinthethoughtsandpracticesofpeople.Reallytodaysworldiscomplexmatrixofpeopleofdifferentraces,regions,faithsandreligions.Differentlanguages,typesofgovernments,traditionsandcultures,economiesandtechnologicaladvancementshavedevelopedvariousorganizationswhichhaveconstantinteractionsandinfluencesofoneuponanother.Theworldhasbeenfacingproblemsandchaosduetomaterialisticattitudeofworldlybeingsatthecostofspiritualism.Moderndayscienceandtechnologyhavebeenabletoprovidecomfortablelifetopeople,buttheadvancementhasfailedtoenterdeepintohumanmindtogivepeaceandhappinesstothem.Thechallengesmodernpeoplefacingaretoachievepeaceandtranquilityofmindandtruehappiness.Itisstronglyfelttheneedofcreatinganinspiringenvironmentforachangeofheartinpeoplebyeverygoodmeans.Changeofheartsofpeopleisnotpossibleovernightbutitcanbeachievedgraduallywithsustainedefforts,effectivemeansandwaysbyimpartingtheBuddhasteachingsofloving-kindness,compassion,altruisticjoyandequanimity.Shakyamuni,theBuddhataughtthatallbeingscontainwithinthemselvestheseedsofenlightenmentwhichcouldbegerminatedonlybyeliminatingignorance.ThetimelessmessagesoftheBuddhainspirepeopletomakeendeavourtolearndharmaintruesenseandpracticelivinginawarenesseverymoment.Suchalivingsurelyhelpspeoplerealisetherealityandtruthoflifebywhichtheywillbeabletogetridofignoranceleadingtoenlightened,happyandsuccessfulliving.ItisdesiredthatpeopleworkinginthefieldofsocialserviceandpropagationofDharmaintruesense,playanimportantroletoinspirepeopletorespondpositivelytotheneedtoimproveinnerselfandoutersocialenvironment.Religiousandsocialworkerswhileworkingforthecauseofentirehumanityshouldbeabletobearinmindthenecessitytodiscussemotions,moralityandethics,relationshipwithfamilyandsociety,government,globalism,natureandenvironmentwhichhaveimpactonindividualoverallpersonality.Forawelldesiredandfruitfulresulttheyshouldbeverymuchconsciousofabovepointswhilechoosingactivitiesthatshouldcoverwiderareas.WehaveastrongbeliefthatBuddhismshouldberegardedasadharmaalivingdharma,theintegralpartofdailylifesituation.PracticeofBuddhismshouldbelinkedwithdirectexperienceratherthanwithscholasticlearningandconventionalritualisticreligion.Inthecountrieswiththediversitiesinrace,culture,tradition,religiousfaith,languageandphysicalstructure,weshouldhavepolicytoworkforunityindiversity,communalharmonyandpeacetoeradicateanytypeorformofcommunalandsectarianconflictanddivision.HumanisticBuddhism-ItsrationaleandthemeMostVenerableMasterHsingYun,thePropounderofHumanisticBuddhismhasspentsixtyyearswithconscientiouseffortforthenoblecausetoestablishdharmainfivecontinentsbypromotingHumanisticBuddhism.HismainaimistopropagateBuddhismthroughculture,tofostertalentthrougheducation,tobenefitsocietythroughcharitableprogrammesandtopurifyhumanmindsthroughBuddhistpractice.HumanisticBuddhisminterpretsBuddhismasDharmawhichstressesonhumanityandthedevelopmentofhumanvalues.Shakyamuni,theBuddhaneverenforcedtoconvertpeopleofotherfaithstohisown.Whathedidwastoenlightenpeoplethroughhisskillfulmeanstohelpthemtoachievepeaceandhappinessofmindintruesense.TherationaleandthemeforHumanisticBuddhismderivefromBuddhasoriginalteachingthatthecentralfocusofdharmaishumanbeingandtherelationofpersontopersoninhisorherlifeonearth.Inhisgreatrenunciation,Mahaviniskraman,Shakyamuni,theBuddhaleftbehindhisfamily,royalty,palaceandeverythingandsatformeditationthatledtodiscoveryoffournobletruths,thetheoryofimpermanenceofeverything,Pratitsamutpat,thedoctrineofcauseandeffect,thedoctrineofmiddlepath,Panchasheela,theeightfoldpathandPrajnaWisdometc.Thenobleandenlightenedonedidneverprefertopasshislifeintheforestandsolitudealooffromthesociety.BahumVSaranamYantiPabbatniVanmicarmrukkhactynimaunussbhayatajjit(ManyarefugedotheyseekOnhills,inwoods,tosacredtrees,Tomonasteriesandshrinestheygo,Folkbyfeartorminated)tamkhsaranamkhmamtamsaranamuttamamtamsaranamgammaSabbadukhpamuccati(Suchrefugeisntsecure,Suchrefugeisntsupreme,FromalldukhaonesnotfreeUntothatrefugegone.)ThesearethesacredlinesspokenbyShakyamuni,theBuddhatoadmonishParibrajakaAggidatta.TheBuddhasaidthatseekingrefugeinthemountains,forestorgrove,ortreewillnotreleasepeoplefromsufferings.TheBuddhacamebacktothesociety,stayedwithpeople,gavesermonsandtaughtthemhowtoliberateoneselffromthesufferingsShakyamuniBuddhasaid,Impartofthesociety,thedharmaistobefoundinthesociety.Hespent45yearsofhislifetalkingaboutspiritualpathtogainactualhappinessoflife,Nirbanapatha.WhattheBuddhaspokeforallthetimeisaboutpurificationofmindasawaytoleadlifeofdharma,thespiritualwayofliving.VajrachhedikaSutra,(diamondsutra)says,Amongalldevotions,devotiontodharmaisthehighest.HumanisticBuddhismgivesmeaningtoreligionasdharmaquitedifferentfromtheconventionalinterpretation.HumanisticBuddhismsparesBuddhismfromtheconceptofreligionwhichmayleadpeopletonarrowercommunaldivision.HumanisticBuddhismandSpiritualSelfThismodern21stcenturyBuddhismgivesemphasisonwhattheBuddhataughtonmoderatelivingwithoutresortingtoexcessiveness.Buddhaneverwentagainstmaterialisticlifeandwhathesaidwasnottobematerialisticatthecostofspiritualvalues.HumanisticBuddhismrelatedBuddhismtothepurification,purityinthesensetoliberatemindfromimpurities,defilements,pollutionandcontamination.HumanisticBuddhismtalksnotofouterpersonalityonthesurfacelevelbuttheinnerpersonalityofaperson,theinnerorthespiritualself.AtrueBuddhistalwaysattemptstoassesshimself.Healwaysaskshimselfhowfarhecanworkwithpatienceandtowhatextendhecantolerateorforgetorforgivetoothersmistakesanddeedstheyhavedonewhicharenotacceptabletohim.Humanbeingsweare,wehaveweaknesseswhichweshouldbeconsciousofifwewanttoelevateourselvestotheheightofspirituality.Itisnotenoughtohavefaithonlywhichcanbeshakenifitisnotbasedonsolidgroundorthedepthofknowledgeofreality.BodhimindleadingtotruehappinessinLifeOneshouldbefullyawareofhowonemisinterpretsdharma.Weshouldbeconsciousthatdharmashouldnotbedefinedandexplainedinourownwaytocomfortandeaseofourownselfasperthesituationdemands.Thebaseofdharmaisequalitynotdiscrimination.TheoryofimpermanenceisthebeautyofBuddhistPhilosophy.Letusseenatureminutelyandtrytounderstandit.Thebeautyofspringcomesbecausefadedleavesfalldownandnewbudsproutsoropensup.Greennessovershadowsgrayness.Newnessdisplacesoldness.Freshnessappearsandstalenessgoes.Thesamelawappliestothehumanmindandananalogyofnatureholdsinthestateofhumanmind.Good,nobleandrighteouschangesmakehumanmindbrighterandturnsittoBodhimindleadingtotruehappinessinlife.Ourefforttochangeourselfcleanseverydirt,pollutionandcontaminationanditmakesusreligiousintruesensetoleadtoenlightenment.UniversalhumanemphasisasHumanisticBuddhismHumanisticBuddhismispartandparceloflife,notseparatefromit.HumanisticBuddhismgivesemphasisonbringingtruthofBuddhismintoeveryhomeandintegrationofBuddhismwithdaytodaylife.ItwillbeagreatmistakeifBuddhismisinterpretedinthelimitedsenseofstereotypepracticeofjustritesandritualsblindly,althoughtheyarethoughttobeofimportanceaseffectivemeanstopropagateBuddhisminpracticallife.MasterTaiHsusaidWhenyoubecomefullyhuman,youwillbecomeaBuddha.WecalluniversalhumanemphasisasHumanisticBuddhism.Thisisthelivingmeaningoftruth.ThephilosophyofHumanisticBuddhismstressesthateverysentientbeinghasBuddhaNature,therefore,shouldbetreatedontheprincipleofequalitywithoutanykindofdiscrimination.Openheartstoallsentientbeingandbringbenefittoallandnooneshouldbeleftoutsideofthecircleofcompassion.AccordingtoMasterTaiHsu,thedeepesttruthofBuddhismisthatweachieveBuddhahoodthroughourhumannatureandhumanpathisthepathwhichleadstoBuddhahood.WhateverisspokenbytheBuddha,thingsthatareneededbypeopleandanythingthatispure,goodandbeautifulisHumanisticBuddhism.HumanisticBuddhismasaGlobalReligionHumanisticBuddhismdoesnotopposetoanytypeofBuddhistsects,schoolsofthoughts,philosophiesandtraditionalorculturalpracticesofBuddhismanditgivesrecognitiontothem.ItregardsthatBuddhisttraditionsarerichinbeautyofVarieties.TherehasbeenamplecommongroundamongalltheschoolsofBuddhismandtheyshouldbeopentolearnfromeveryotherBuddhisttradition.EsotericandExotericBuddhismlikeBajrayanaorTantrayan,TheravadaandMahayana,BuddhismassociatedwithnationslikeTibetan,Chinese,Japanese,NewarBuddhism,NorthernandSoutherntraditionsmakeupthefullnessofBuddhism.EverybestextractandessencemakesupHumanisticBuddhism.HumanisticBuddhismpreachesforactivevirtuesratherthanmerepassivegoodcharacters.PropagatorsofHumanisticBuddhismbelievethatfuturedevelopmentofBuddhismdependuponleaningtowards
