Abstract
ThispaperaddressesissuesrelatingtotheefficientaccessanddiscoveryofWebservicesacrossmultipleUDDIBusinessRegistries(UBRs).TheabilitytoexploreWebservicesacrossmultipleUBRsisbecomingachallengeparticularlyassizeandmagnitudeoftheseregistriesincrease.AsWebservicesproliferate,findinganappropriateWebserviceacrossoneormoreserviceregistriesusingexistingregistryAPIs(i.e.UDDIAPIs)raisesanumberofconcernssuchasperformance,efficiency,end-to-endreliability,andmostimportantlyqualityofreturnedresults.ClientsdonothavetoendlesslysearchaccessibleUBRsforfindingappropriateWebservicesparticularlywhenoperatingviamobiledevices.FindingrelevantWebservicesshouldbetimeeffectiveandhighlyproductive.InanattempttoenhancetheefficiencyofsearchingforbusinessesandWebservicesacrossmultipleUBRs,weproposeanovelexplorationengine,theWebServiceCrawlerEngine(WSCE).WSCEiscapableofcrawlingmultipleUBRs,andenablesfortheestablishmentofacentralizedWebservices’repositorywhichcanbeusedforlarge-scalediscoveryofWebservices.Thepaperpresentsexperimentalvalidation,results,andanalysisofthepresentedideas.
1.Introduction
Thecontinuousgrowthandpropagationoftheinternethavebeensomeofthemainfactorsforinformationoverloadwhichatmanyinstancesactasdeterrentsforquickandeasydiscoveryofinformation.Webservicesareinternet-based,modularapplications,andtheautomaticdiscoveryandcompositionofWebservicesareanemergingtechnologyofchoiceforbuildingunderstandableapplicationsusedforbusiness-to-businessintegrationandareofanimmenseinteresttogovernments,businesses,aswellasindividuals.AsWebservicesproliferate,thesamedilemmaperceivedinthediscoveryofWebpageswillbecometangibleandthesearchingforspecificbusinessapplicationsorWebservicesbecomeschallengingandtimeconsumingparticularlyasthenumberofUDDIBusinessRegistries(UBRs)beginsto
multiply.
Inaddition,decentralizingUBRsaddsanotherlevelofcomplexityonhowtoeffectivelyfindWebserviceswithinthesedistributedregistries.Decentralizationof
UBRsisbecomingtangibleasnewoperatingsystems,applications,andAPIsarealreadyequippedwithbuilt-infunctionalitiesandtoolsthatenableorganizationsor
businessestopublishtheirowninternalUBRsforintranetandextranetusesuchastheEnterpriseUDDIServicesinWindowsServer2003,WebShpereApplicationServer,SystinetBusinessRegistry,jUDDI,tonameafew.Enablingbusinessesororganizationstoself-operateandmangetheirownUBRswillmaximizethelikelihoodofhavingasignificantincreaseinthenumberofbusinessregistriesandtherefore,clientswillsoonfacethechallengeoffindingWebservicesacrosshundreds,ifnotthousandsofUBRs.
AttheheartoftheServiceOrientedArchitecture(SOA)isaserviceregistrywhichconnectsandmediatesserviceproviderswithclientsasshowninFigure1.Serviceregistriesextendtheconceptofanapplication-centricWebbyallowingclients(orconceivablyapplications)toaccessawiderangeofWebservicesthatmatchspecificsearchcriteriainanautonomousmanner.
WithoutpublishingWebservicesthroughregistries,clientswillnotbeabletolocateservicesinanefficientmanner,andserviceproviderswillhavetodevoteextra
effortsinadvertisingtheirservicesthroughotherchannels.ThereareseveralcompaniesthatofferWeb-basedWebservicedirectoriessuchasWebServiceList[1],RemoteMethods[2],WSIndex[3],andXM[4].However,duetothefactthattheseWeb-basedservicedirectoriesfailtoadheretoWebservices’standardssuchasUDDI,itislikelythattheybecomevulnerabletobeingunreliablesourcesforfindingrelevantWebservices,andmaybecomedisconnectedfromtheWebservicesenvironmentasinthecasesofBindingPointandSalCentralwhichclosed
theirWeb-basedWebservicedirectoriesaftermanyyearsofexposure.
ApartfromhavingWeb-basedservicedirectories,therehavebeennumerouseffortsthatattemptedtoimprovethediscoveryofWebservices[5,6,9,21],however,manyofthemhavefailedtoaddresstheissueofhandlingdiscoveryoperationsacrossmultipleUBRs.DuetothefactthatUBRsarehostedonWebservers,theyaredependentonnetworktrafficandperformance,andtherefore,clientsthatarelookingforappropriateWebservicesaresusceptibletoperformanceissues
whencarryingoutmultipleUBRsearchrequests.Toaddresstheabove-mentionedissues,thisworkintroducesaframeworkthatservesastheheartofourWebServicesRepositoryBuilder(WSRB)architecture[7]byenhancingthediscoveryofWebserviceswithoutha
