OnlinedatingisthepracticeofsearchingforaromanticorpotentialpartnerontheInternet,typicallyviaadedicatedwebsite.Withthedevelopmentofcommunicationaltechnology,onlinedatinghashadanincreasinglysignificanteffectonthewaysinwhichpeoplefindlove.Theconvenienceofbeingabletosiftamonghundredsofprofilesinsteadofgoingoutisthemostimportantbenefitofonlinedating.OnetenthofAmericans,especiallyforthosewhoaresingleandactivelyfindinglong-termpartnershaveusedonlinedatingsitesormobileapp（Smith&Duggan,2013）.Furthermore,peoplehavehadmorepositiveattitudestowardonlinedating（Smith&Duggan,2013）.Tosomeextent,onlinedatingcouldbreakthelimitationofsocialcircle,especiallyforoverseasstudentwholiveinnewcountryandculturalenvironment.Thecurrentlyresearchexploredtheattitudesandhabitsofoverseasstudentstowardonlinedating.

Severalstudieshavebeenconductedonhabitsandattitudesofonlinedating.ThestudyofSmithandDuggon（2013）aboutonlinedatingandrelationshipshowedthatmeetingpeoplewhosharesimilarinterestsorhabitswasthemainreasonforonlinedatingamongactiveonlinedaters.Italsoindicatedthatmeetingpeoplewhojustwanttohavefunwithoutbeinginaseriousrelationshipwastheleastcommonmajorreasonforonlinedating.SimilarresultthathadbeenfoundinthestudyofRomano（2013）wasthat“onlinedatingisagreatwaytomeetpeoplewithhighlevelofcompatibilityandrealmarriagepotential”.However,SmithandDuggon’sresearchshowedthat82%Americanhadnegativeonlinedatingexperiencewhenuseonlinedatingsite.ThestudyofAnderson（2012）showedthatthemajorityofrespondentschattedonlineatleasttwoweeksbeforemeetingadate.

Theresultsmightbeoutdatedinsomeoftheresearchaboutonlinedating.MaddenandLenhartconductedtheirsurveyin2006.Butfrom2006tonow,therewasasignificantdevelopmentincommunicationaltechnologyarea.ThesurveybySmithandDuggonwasonlyconductedinAmericaanditdidnotincludeoverseasstudents.Sowhataretheattitudesandhabitsofoverseasstudentsregardingonlinedating?

Noneofpreviousresearchhasconsideredthespecialgroupofonlinedaters.

ThisstudyaimstoanalyzetheonlinedatingattitudesandhabitsamongoverseasstudentsinAustralia.ThehypothesisofthisresearchisthattherearedifferenceinonlinedatinghabitsandattitudesbetweenAmericanandoverseasstudentsinAustralia.

Thefindingofthisresearchshouldbehelpfultopsychologistsandcompanieswhichrunonlinedatingbusiness,suchasonlinedatingwebsites.Byanalyzingonlinedaters’attitudesandhabits,theycouldimproveonlinedatingservice,evenextendoff-linedatingservice.

Methodology

OnNovember15th2013,asurveywasconductedthatwasaimedatfindingonlinedatingattitudesandhabitsofoverseasstudentsinAustralia.ThesurveywasconductedatEnglishinstituteNavitasinSydney.Thesampleincluded50internationalstudents（34malesand16females）.ThemajorityofrespondentswereAsian.

Theresearchwascarriedoutbymeansofaquestionnairethatcontained10questions.Ninequestionswereclose-endedandonlythequestionaboutnationalitywasopen-ended.

Thequestionnaireconsistedofthreesections.Thefirstsectionrecordeddemographicinformation,includinggender,ageandnationality.Thesecondsectionwasrelatedtooverseasstudents’attitudeaboutonline-dating.Thethirdsectionfocusedononlinedatinghabitsofoverseasstudent.

Theresultswerecollatedandconvertedtopercentages.Thedatawererepresentedingraphsandtablesandtheanalyzed.

Results

Graph1illustratesthemainreasonforusingonlinedatingsitesofoverseasstudentsinAustralia.

Overall,thelargestproportionofinternationalstudentsinAustraliausedonlinedatingsitesinordertomeetpeoplewhosharesimilarinterestorhobbits.

Accordingtothegraph,abouttwothirdsofoverseasstudentsusedonlinedatingsiteswiththemainpurposeofmeetingpeoplewhosharesimilarinterestorhobbits（63%）.However,thetwoleastcommonreasonsofoverseasstudentsusingonlinedatingsiteswerehavingaschedulethatmakesithardtomeetinterestingpeopleinotherways（6%）andmeetingpeoplewhojustwanttohavefunwithoutbeinginseriousrelationship（6%）.Therewasthesamepercentageofrespondentswhochosefindingsomeoneforalong-termrelationshipormarriage（13%）andmeetingpeoplewhoshareyourbeliefsorvalues（13%）asthemainreasons.

Overall,thenumberofonlinedaterswhohadbadexperiencewhenuseonlinedatingsitearemorethanonlinedaterswhoneverhadbadexperience.

Ascanbeseenfromthepiechart,56%ofrespondentshadbadexperiencewhenuseonlinedatingsite.Thepercentageofoverseasstudentswhoneverhadbadexperiencewasslightlylowerthanthatofonlinedaterwhohadbadexperience（44%）.

Ingeneral,themajorityofrespondentshadonlinechatatleast3weeksbeforemeetingonlinedaters.Therewerestillmoreonetenthofstudentsusingonlinedatingonlytomeetpeopleonline.

Accordingtothegraph,aquarterofstudentshadonlinechatformorethanonemonthbeforemeeting,whichwaslesscommonthanchattingonlinefor3-4weeksbeforemeeting（31%）.Furthermore,thenumberofoverseasstudentwhohadonlinechatforlessthanoneweekbeforemeetinginpersonwasasabouttwiceasthemwhotook1-2weekstochatonlinewiththeironlinedaters（19%and12%respectively）.

Discussion

TheaimofthisresearchwastoanalyzeattitudesandhabitsofonlinedatingamonginternationalstudentsinAustralia.ThehypothesisofthisstudywasthatoverseasstudentsinAustraliahaddifferentattitudesandhabitsinonlinedatingwithAmericans.Itseemsthatthefindingofthissurveypartiallysupportedthehypothesis,asthemajorityofstudentsindicatedthatmeetingpeoplewhosharesimilarinterestsorhabitswasthemajorreasonforonlinedating.However,overahalfofrespondentshadbadexperiencewhenuseonlinedatingsite.Thelastfindingwasthatstudentsoftenspentatleast4weeksononlinechatbeforemeetingdate.Theseresultsshouldbeanalyzed.

ItisevidentthatoverseasstudentsinAustraliausedonlinedatingsiteinordertomeetpeoplewhosharesimilarinterestsorhabits.Similarly,thestudyofSmithandDuggon（2013）namedonlinedatingandrelationshipshowedthatmeetingpeoplewhosharesimilarinterestsorhabitswasthemainreasonforonlinedatingamongactiveonlinedaters.ThestudyofRomano（2013）alsoindicatedthat“onlinedatingisagreatwaytomeetpeoplewithhighlevelofcompatibilityandrealmarriagepotential”.OnepossiblereasonofthissimilaritybetweenoverseasstudentsandAmericanscouldbethatonlinedatingistheeasiestwaytofindpeoplewhosharesimilarinterests.Searchtechniquesandfilteredfunctionofonlinedatingsitesallowonlinedaterstofindapotentialdatewithhighefficiency.Furthermore,onlinedatersmightbemorerelaxedandconfidentwhencommunicatingonlineorviaemail,thanparticipatinginface-to-faceinteraction,especiallyforthosepeoplewhohavecommunicationbarriers.Inaddition,overseasstudentslikelydonothaveastrongdesiretofindlong-termpartnersbecauseoftheirconditionofheavystudyburden.Theymightjustwanttobroadentheirsocialcirclebyusingonlinedatingsitewhentheyliveinnewsurroundings.

Thestudyfoundthatthenumberofonlinedaterswhohadbadexperienceswhenuseonlinedatingsiteswasmorethanonlinedaterswhoneverhadbadexperiences.Onepossiblereasoncouldbebadserviceofonlinedatingsites.Manyonlinedatingsitesrequirepaymentifonlinedaterwanttogetinformationorbackgroundaboutpotentialdaters.Butsometimestheinformationisuselessoruntrustworthy.Anotherlikelyreasonmightbetheriskofprivacyleaks.Personalinformationsuchashomeaddressandphonenumberisputininternetsothatawiderangeofonlineuserscancontactyou.TheresearchresultissupportedbySmithandDuggon（2013）,whichshowedthatamajority（54%）ofonlinedatershavefeltthatsomeoneseriouslymisrepresentedthemselvesintheirprofile.Andoveraquarterofonlinedatershavebeencontactedthroughanonlinedatingsiteinawaythatmadethemfeelharassedoruncomfortable.

ThelastfindingworthanalyzingisthatthemajorityoverseasstudentsinAustraliaspentatleast4weeksbeforemeetingonlinedaters.However,thestudyofAnderson（2012）showedthatthemajorityofAmericanschattedonlineonly2weeksbeforemeetingadater.Therearetwolikelyreasonswhyoverseasstudentswouldbewillingtospendmoretimeononlinechatbeforemeeting.Firstly,overseasstudentsmightneedmoretobuildstrongconnectionbyonlinechatting.ComparedwithAmericanwhohadopendatingtraditionoverseasstudentsinAustraliawouldbemoreconcernedaboutdatingsafety.Anotheronereasoncouldbesufficienttimetoarrangemeeting.Studentswhoarenotfamiliarwiththenewenvironmentandcultureneedmoretimetoprepareformeeting.

OnelimitationofthisresearchisthatthequestionnairewasonlyconductedatoneEnglishinstitution.ThevastmajorityofsampleswereAsian.Similarcustomandculturelimitthediversityoftheresults.Anotheronelimitationisthatresultswerenotcomparedbygender.Thirdly,theclose-endedquestionsprovidelimite
