Weknowthatfromthetimetheywakeuptothetimetheygotobed,theaverageBritishmanandwomanwillhavespentatleast6hoursindirectcontactwiththemainmedia.BythisImeanradio,television,andoneorotherofthenewspapers.Aswellasthese,therewillhavebeenbillboardadvertisements,salespromotionsinshops,andpossiblyafilmoraplayinthetheatre.Themediasurroundusinoureverydaylives,andthereisalmostnoescapingthem.Theyaresoimportantthatyoucannowevenstudythematuniversity.
InBritainthemostimportantofthem–television–islargelysharedbetweentheBBCandITV.Theformerisapubliccorporation,whilethelatterisacollectionofcommercialinstitutions.Bothprovideminorityinterestchannels(BBC2andChannel4)aswellasthemorepopularmainstreamchannels(BBC1andITV).ThemoneythatsupportsthesetwoTVsystemsisderivedfromalicensefeeinthecaseoftheBBC,andadvertisingrevenueforITV.RadioissimilarlydividedbetweentheBBCandcommercialradiocompanies.
