Geographyandclimate

Lanzhou[1]islocatedat36°03n,103°40‘e,whichistheclosesttothecapitaloftheotherfourprovinces（autonomousregions）inNorthwestChina.Northandsouthofthecity,surroundedbymountains,EastandwestoftheYellowRiver,pillowmountainwithriver,mountainandwater,withanaveragealtitudeof1500meters,withthecharacteristicsofabasincity.

Lanzhouislocatedintheinland,withobviouscontinentalcharacteristics,belongingtotemperatecontinentalclimate.Itischaracterizedbylessprecipitation,moresunshine,greatlightenergypotential,dryclimate,largeannualanddailytemperaturedifference,slightlyhotinsummer,withthehighesttemperatureofabout30℃,coldbutnotextremelycoldinwinter,andthelowesttemperatureofaboutminus10℃.Theannualsunshinehoursare2600hours,thefrostfreeperiodis180days,andtheannualaverageprecipitationis250-350mm,mainlyconcentratedinJunetoSeptember.Theannualaveragetemperatureis9.3℃.

Atpresent,thereare156kindsofdeposits,occurrencesand35kindsofmineralsinLanzhou.Therearerelativelyrichnon-metallicminerals,includinglimestone,fluxdolomite,fluxquartzite,ferrosiliconquartziteandrefractoryclay.Amongthem,thereservesofquartziteareconcentrated,andthetransportationreservesreach300milliontons,whichprovidessufficientreserveresourcesforferrosiliconindustry.Thecoalreservesare905milliontons.ThemainminingareasareYaojieandAganmines,whichbasicallymeettherecentrequirementsofLanzhou.Thereare8cascadehydropowerstationsfromJishixiatoHeishanxiaintheupperreachesoftheYellowRiver.Inaddition,HuangshuiRiveranditstributaryDatongRivercanalsobedeveloped.

ThewaterresourcesinLanzhoucityarelowerthanthenationalaveragelevel,buttheinflowwaterresourcesarerich.TheinflowoftheYellowRiveranditstributariesHuangshuiandDatongRiverrunningthroughthecityis33.7billioncubicmeters,andthewatervolumeisstable.Thereisnofreezingineachseason,andthesedimentcontentissmall,whichcanmeettheneedsofurbanindustrialandagriculturalwaterandlivingwater.Accordingtothepreliminarysurvey,theannualgroundwaterinthecityis960millioncubicmeters.

Thereare182550hectaresofforestrylandinthecity,accountingfor13.46%ofthetotalarea,including90157hectaresofforestvacantland,withgreatpotentialforfurtherafforestation.Thenaturalgrasslandareais770000hectares.Wildanimalandplantresourcesarealsoabundant.Thereareabout600speciesofwildplants,and40%ofthemhaveobviouseconomicvalue.Gansu’sfamoustraditionalChinesemedicines,suchaslicorice,angelica,Codonopsis,ephedra,Gentiana,podophyllum,Zushima,aredistributedinLanzhou.Thereare187kindsofwildanimals,andtherareanimalsare:

lowmountainforestandpastoralareas,locatedinthewest,southwestandsouthofLanzhou;rivervalley,SichuanandTaiwanvegetableandfruitareas,locatedintherivervalleyterraces;lowmountainandhillygrainandoilareas,distributedinthenorthmountainofYuzhong,northwestofGaolanCounty,andqinzhengchuanofYongdengCounty.Thecomplexanddiverselandtypesaresuitableforthedevelopmentofagriculture,forestry,animalhusbandry,sidelineandfishery,withgreatdevelopmentpotential.

AccordingtothemaindatabulletinofthesixthnationalcensusofLanzhouin2010,thecity’spermanentpopulationis3616163.In2010,thecity’spermanentpopulationhas1112369households,with3138817households.Theaveragepopulationofeachhouseholdis2.82.Amongthecity’spermanentpopulation,themalepopulationis1849809,accountingfor51.15%,andthefemalepopulationis1766354,accountingfor48.85%.Thesexratioofpopulation（100females,maletofemaleratio）decreasedfrom108.56inthefifthnationalcensusin2000to104.72.
