Description
Thiscoursefocusesonthestrategicchallengesconfrontingfirmsthatcompeteintheglobaleconomy.Afirm’sstrategyisits“theory”ofhowtogaincompetitiveadvantageandcompetesuccessfullyinthemarketplace.Strategicmanagementistheprocessthatmanagers,especiallyexecutives,developandimplementafirm’sstrategy.Ourobjectiveistohaveanenhancedunderstandingofthemostfundamentalquestioninstrategicmanagement:

Mosttextbookspresentknowledge“asis”andignorethefactthatthefieldhasnumerousinconclusivebutimportantdebates.EverychapteroftheGlobalStrategytext—nowaglobalmarketleader—hasasectionon“DebatesandExtensions,”someofwhichhavesignificantethicaldimensions(seealsothecriticaldiscussionquestionsonethicsineverychapter).Pickanyonedebate/ethicaldilemmatowriteoneortwoone-pagepapers(single-spaced,nocoverpageplease).

Iexpectstudentstoformgroupsof2-3students(maximum4students).Asagroup,youwillpresentadebatebasedonacase.Itwillnormallybepresentedafterthelectureisoverbutbeforetheclassdiscussionbegins.Youwillhave15minutesand6slides.Slide1isthemandatorytitleslide,withallnamesandemails.Soyoureallyonlyhave5slides.UseSlides2and3tosummarizethecase,anduseSlides4and5toillustratehowthecaseillustratesadebate.Itisnotmandatorythatallmembersofthegrouppresentthecase.
Pleasenotethatthekeyisnottobecomprehensive.Thecasediscussion,afteryourpresentationinvolvingtheentireclass,willbecomprehensive.

Thefirstpartwillbeacasestudyfocusingonahard-to-tacklestrategicproblem.Examplesinclude:
(1)Howtoenteranewforeignmarket?
(2)HowtodivorcefromourJVpartnerwhileminimizingthedamagetoourinterestsandreputation?
(3)Howtogovernanewlyacquiredforeigncompany?
(4)Howtodealwithsomeethicaldilemmas?

Trytofollowtheformatofthecasesthatwestudyduringtheterm,giveenoughdetailsonthebackgroundofthefirm,andfocusonadifficultdecision.Thispartshouldtakeapproximately6-8pages.Thesecondpartwillbeyouranalysisandrecommendationstothesemanagersintermsofhowtoproceed,whichshouldtakeabout2-4pages(similartoyourcaseanalysismentionedearlier)—atleast1pageshouldbedevotedtorecommendations.Alltogether,theideallengthis10pages,excludingattachmentssuchasfiguresandtables.Intermsoftheattachments,pleasebereasonable.Undernocircumstancescanthetotalreport(allinclusive)exceed20pages—Iwillstopreadingafterp.20.
Thebestpaperswillshowevidenceofsomeinvestigativeefforts—diggingformoreinformation,interviews/phonecalls/emailswithmanagers—andofsynthesisandcarefulediting.Theywillalsobeinsightful,goingbeyondthemostobviouslessonstodrawoutthestorybehindthestory.
Thequalitywillbeevaluatedalongcontentandprocessdimensions(60%and40%,respectively).Carefuleditingisexpected.Simply“cutandpaste”sectionswrittenbydifferentcoauthorswillresultinaverypoorgrade.Appendix1givesacompletelistofthegradingcriteria—payattention!
