slowcommodityprices,smallfarmerswhoarenotconnectedwithFairTradearefleeingruralareasinsearchofwork.Womenandchildrenareleftbehindtotendthefieldsandkidsaretakenoutofschool.Farmerswhogrowfairtradeproducts,incontrast,earnalivingwagethathelpspayfortheirexpenses,investinthefuture,andkeepfamiliestogether.
5.Supportcommunitydevelopment
FairTradeproducersandworkersbelongtocooperativesandcommunitydevelopmentorganisationsthatinvestinbetterhousing,healthprograms,schools,andscholarships.Forexample,theCostaRicancoffeecooperativeCOOCAFEusesfairtraderevenuestofundimprovementsin70localschoolsandhasprovided6,700scholarshipstostudentssotheycanattendhighschoolanduniversity.
6.Protecttheenvironment
FairTradesupportssmallfarmerswhouselandmoreefficientlyandinamoreenvironmentallyfriendlyway.Traditionalsmallfarmscontainmanyspeciesofcrop,shadeandfruittrees.Fruittreesprovidehabitatforsongbirdsandhelppreventtopsoilerosionandmudslides.FairTradehelpsfarmersmakethetransitiontoorganicfarmingandtheuseofmoresustainabletechniques.
7.Promotedemocracy
FairTradeproducersandworkersbelongtodemocratically-runcooperativesorcommunityorganisations.Tofunctionsuccessfully,thesecooperativesmustbeopenandtransparentintheiroperations.Thishelpsfostergrassrootsdemocracyinmanycountrieswheremanycitizenshavelittleexperienceparticipatinginthedemocraticprocess.
8.Providealong-termsolution
OneofthetenetsofFairTradeisthatbuyersandproducersbuildlongtermpartnerships.Unlikeaid,whichisdependentondonors,FairTradeoffersasustainablewayforfarmers,artisans,andtheirfamiliestoimprovetheirlivelihoods.
9.Preventillegaldrugcrops
Lowcoffeepricesmeanthanmanycoffeefarmerscannotmakealivingbygrowingcoffeealone.Thishaspushedmanycoffeefarmerstostartgrowingcropsdestinedfortheillegaldrugtrade.Coca,theplantfromwhichcocaineisderived,andchat,anamphetamine-likestimulant,aremoredangeroustogrow,butmorelucrativeforsmallfarmers.Whentheyearnafairpricefortheircoffee,fewerfarmersneedtoswitchtogrowingcocaorchat.
10.Promoteeconomicstability
Inmostdevelopingcountries,themajorityoftheworkforceisengagedinagriculturalactivities.BuyingFairTradeCertifiedcommoditieshelpstosupportsmall-scaleagriculture.Thiscanincreaseacountry'

Accorimplementedasustainabledevelopmentpurchasingcharterin2002.Thecharterwassenttocertifiedsuppliersworldwidewiththeobjectiveofapplyingsocialandenvironmentalcommitmentsmoreeffectively.TheissuewasalsotoapplytheAccorSustainabilitypolicyinproductselectionandtodemonstratethatallAccorbrands,includingtheeconomicalones,couldimplementsuchapolicy.Fairtradeconsistsofpurchasingproductsataguaranteedminimumpricethatcoversbothproductioncostsandtheproducer'
sbasicneeds.
Solution
In2003,Sofitelqualityhotelslaunchedaninitialtest,purchasingMaxHavelaarcoffeefortheir38hotelsinFrance.Thistestclearlydemonstratedthequalityoffairtradecoffeeintermsoftaste.Sofitelemployeesweretrainedinthetopicof'
fairtrade'
andhotelclientswerealsoinformedthroughaspecialleaflet.
InMay2004,EtapandFormule1introducedfairtradecoffee,teaandhotchocolateatbreakfastinallofits490hotelsinFrance.500000leafletsplacedinbedroomsinformedhotelclients.Theseleafletsareco-producedbyAccor,MaxHavelaarandthefairtradeproductproviders(Indar,Fichaux,Mombana).Theywerethefirsthotelbrandstooffersuchawiderangeoffairtradeproducts,toagreatnumberofhotels.
In2005,fairtradegoods,suchastea,coffee,chocolate,wineandsugarareproposedinmorethan1000Accorhotelsin8differentcountries.

IthasbeensomeyearsnowsincetheFairTrademovementsprungitselfonthespecialtycoffeeworld,usingapassionateandskillfullymanagedmediacampaigntopersuadeacoreofconcernedconsumersthattheyoughttopayabitmoreforcoffeesthatreturnmoremoneydirectlytothesmall-holdingfarmerswhogrowthecoffee.Thetimingcouldn'
thavebeenmoreappropriate,becauseaboutthetimetheFair-Trademovementkickedoff,greencoffeepricesontheworldmarketbegantheirdevastatingplungetowhateventuallybecamehistoriclows.Althoughpricessincehaverecoveredmodestly,thecurrentpricepaidforadecentgradeofgreencoffeefrommanycoffee-growingregionsremainslessthanitcostsfarmerstoproducethatcoffee,andsufferingincoffee-growingregionscontinues.

AsIoftenfindmyselfpointingout,Fair-Tradeoffersjustonealternativeforcaringconsumers.Othercertifications-organic,RainforestAlliance-alsohaveatleastsomepositiveimpactonprices,plussimplypayingmoreforabetter-tastingcoffeeisinthelongrunapowerfulandsignificantactofassistancetofarmers.
GoodCoffeewiththeGoodFeelings?
Whichgetsustothepointofthisreview:
better-tastingcoffees.WhenFairTradefirstkickedoff,IwasregularlycontactedbymediapeoplewhowantedtoknowwhetherconsumerswhopaidFair-Tradepremiumswereactuallygettinggoodcoffeetogowiththegoodfeelings.Thesuspicion,ofcourse,wasthatFairTradewasado-goodergimmickdesignedtoselllousycoffeeathigherprices.
ThefirstpointIalwaysmadetotheseinquirerswasthatnothingpossiblycouldtasteworsethantheblandlylifelessrobustasinhabitingthecansandbottlesofsupermarketcoffees,soconsumershadagoodstartwithanyspecialtycoffee,includingFairTrade.

Evenwhenwemovebeyondsuchsimplicities,however,thingsstilllookrathergoodforfansofeconomicjusticeandfinecoffee.
