PrideandPrejudiceisthemasterpieceofJaneAusten,wellknownallovertheworld.Ithasbeentakenintothelistoftheworld’stenfamousnovels.Onthebasisofunderstandingthenovelthoroughlyandconsultingtherelativematerials,theauthorofthisthesisanalyzesfourapproachesadoptedbytheauthortohighlightingthethemeofPrideandPrejudice,suchasthecleveremploymentofirony,theexcellentcreationwithintheextremelimitedmaterials,therealisticwritingstyle,andthegreatskillsofcharacterization.

1.Introduction
ThepurposeofthisthesisistoanalyzefourapproachesadoptedbyJaneAustentohighlightingthethemeofPrideandPrejudice.Attheverybeginningtheintroductiontotheauthorandherworksisverynecessary.
JaneAustenisafamousEnglishwomanwriterinthe18thcentury.Shewasbornin1775atStevensoninHampshireofamiddle-classfamily,educatedathomeandremainedunmarried,leadinganuneventfullifeof40years.Herfatherwasarector,shewastheseconddaughterandseventhchildinafamilyofeight.In1817,thisbrightattractivelittlewomandied,quietlyasshehadlived,atWinchesterandwasburiedinthecathedral.
JaneAustenstartedwritingveryearly.ShewroteonlysixcompletenovelsSenseandSensibility,PrideandPrejudice,MansfieldPark,Emma,NorthangerAbbeyandPersuasion,andsheleftbehindthreefragmentsLadySusan,TheWatsons,andSandition.

2.1Ironyemployedinthenovel
PrideandPrejudiceisamodelworkofJaneAusten’ssuccessfulemploymentofirony.Ironyplaysadecisivepartinherwritingstyleaswellasinplotdevelopment.Theverbalironyandthesituationalordramaticironyhereareespeciallynote-worthy.
2.1.1Verbalirony
“Itisatruthuniversallyacknowledgedthatasinglemaninpossessionofagoodfortunemustbeinwantofawife.”Theveryfirstsentenceestablishesdelightfulandhumorousstyleofthenovel.ThefollowingdialoguebetweenMr.andMrs.Bennetfurtherexplainstherealmeaningofthe“acknowledgedtruth”inthesameway.
2.2Thelimitedmaterialsofthenovel
2.2.1Thehistoricalbackgroundofthenovel
Thesecondhalfofthe18thcenturyandthefirstfewdecadesofthe19thcenturywitnessedaseriesofgreateventsinEngland:
theindustrialrevolution,theFrenchrevolution,andtheNapoleonicwars,whichhadtheirstrongimpactuponEngland’seconomy,politicsandsociety.Thisnovelhasbeencreatedundersuchunevenandcomplexsocialconditions.
3.Conclusion
Thecleveremploymentofirony,theexcellentcreationwithinlimitedmaterials,therealisticwritingstyle,andthegreatskillofcharacterizationallmarkthesuccessofthenovel.ThesefourapproacheshighlightthethemeofloveandmarriageinPrideandPrejudice.Theperfectunionofwritingmethodsandthethemeofthenovelmakesthisartisticworkshiningwithtypicalluster.NowondertheBritishCriticin1813saidthatPrideandPrejudiceis“farsuperiortoallthepublicationsofthekindwhichhavecomebeforeus”(HelenLefroy1998:
59)
Owingtothelimitationofthereferencesandtheknowledgeoftheauthorofthispaper,theresearchisnotcompletedandthoroughenoughandsomeideasarenotverymature.Inaddition,otherkindsofwritingmethods,whicharehelpfultoemphasizethethemeaswell,arenotinvolvedin,becauseofthelengthyofthepaper.Thereshouldbedonemoreinthisaspectinthefuture.
