Iwanttocongratulateallofyou—theparents,thegrandparents,thebrothersandsisters,thefamilyandfriendswhosupportedtheseyoungmeninsomanyways.Thisisyourday,aswell.Justthinkaboutit—yoursons,yourbrothers,yournephews—theyspentthelastfouryearsfarfromhomeandclosetoSpelman,andyettheyarestillheretoday.(Applause.)Soyou’vedonesomethingright.Graduates,giveabigroundofapplausetoyourfamilyforeverythingthatthey’vedoneforyou.(Applause.)
Iknowthatsomeofyouhadtowaitinlonglinestogetintotoday’sceremony.AndIwouldapologize,butitdidnothaveanythingtodowithsecurity.Thosegraduatesjustwantedyoutoknowwhatit’sliketoregisterforclasseshere.(Laughterandapplause.)Andthistimeofyearbringsadifferentkindofstress—everyseniorstoppingbyGlosterHalloverthepastweekmakingsureyournamewasactuallyonthelistofstudentswhometallthegraduationrequirements.(Applause.)Ifitwasn’tonthelist,youhadtofigureoutwhy.Wasitthatlibrarybookyoulenttothattriflingroommatewhodidn’treturnit?
(Laughter.)WasitDr.Johnson’spolicyclass?
(Applause.)DidyougetenoughCrownForumcredits?

Onthatlastpoint,I’mgoingtoexercisemypowerasPresidenttodeclarethisspeechsufficientCrownForumcreditsforanyotherwiseeligiblestudenttograduate.Thatismygraduationgifttoyou.(Applause.)Youhaveaspecialdispensation.
Now,graduates,IamhumbledtostandherewithallofyouasanhonoraryMorehouseMan.(Applause.)Ifinallymadeit.(Laughter.)AndasIdo,I’mmindfulofanoldsaying:
“YoucanalwaystellaMorehouseMan—(applause)—butyoucan’ttellhimmuch.”(Applause.)Andthatmakesmytaskalittlemoredifficult,Isuppose.ButIthinkitalsoreflectsthesenseofpridethat’salwaysbeenpartofthisschool’stradition.
BenjaminMays,whoservedasthepresidentofMorehouseforalmost30years,understoodthattraditionbetterthananybody.Hesaid—andIquote—“ItwillnotbesufficientforMorehouseCollege,foranycollege,forthatmatter,toproduceclevergraduates—butratherhonestmen,menwhocanbetrustedinpublicandprivatelife—menwhoaresensitivetothewrongs,thesufferings,andtheinjusticesofsocietyandwhoarewillingtoacceptresponsibilityforcorrecting(those)ills.”
Itwasthatmission—notjusttoeducatemen,buttocultivategoodmen,strongmen,uprightmen—thatbroughtcommunityleaderstogetherjusttwoyearsaftertheendoftheCivilWar.Theyassembledalistof37men,freeblacksandfreedslaves,whowouldmakeupthefirstprospectiveclassofwhatlaterbecameMorehouseCollege.Mostofthosefirststudentshadadesiretobecometeachersandpreachers—tobetterthemselvessotheycouldhelpothersdothesame.
Acenturyandahalflater,timeshavechanged.Butthe“MorehouseMystique”stillendures.Someofyouprobablycameherefromcommunitieswhereeverybodylookedlikeyou.Othersmayhavecomehereinsearchofacommunity.AndIsuspectthatsomeofyouprobablyfeltalittlebitofcultureshockthefirsttimeyoucametogetherasaclassinKing’sChapel.Allofasudden,youweren’ttheonlyhighschoolsportscaptain,youweren’ttheonlystudentcouncilpresident.Youweresuddenlyinagroupofhighachievers,andthatmeantyouwereexpectedtodosomethingmore.
That’stheuniquesenseofpurposethatthisplacehasalwaysinfused—theconvictionthatthisisatraininggroundnotonlyforindividualsuccess,butforleadershipthatcanchangetheworld.
Dr.Kingwasjust15yearsoldwhenheenrolledhereatMorehouse.Hewasanunknown,undersized,unassumingyoungfreshmanwholivedathomewithhisparents.AndIthinkit’sfairtosayhewasn’tthecoolestkidoncampus—forthesuitshewore,hisclassmatescalledhim“Tweed.”ButhiseducationatMorehousehelpedtoforgetheintellect,thediscipline,thecompassion,thesoulforcethatwouldtransformAmerica.ItwasherethathewasintroducedtothewritingsofGandhiandThoreau,andthetheoryofcivildisobedience.Itwasherethatprofessorsencouragedhimtolookpasttheworldasitwasandfightfortheworldasitshouldbe.Anditwashere,atMorehouse,asDr.Kinglaterwrote,where“Irealizedthatnobody—wasafraid.”
Notevenofsomebadweather.Iaddedonthatpart.(Laughter.)Iknowit’swetoutthere.ButDr.Wilsontoldmeyouallhadachoiceanddecidedtodoitouthereanyway.(Applause.)That’saMorehouseMantalking.
Now,thinkaboutit.Forblackmeninthe’40sandthe’50s,thethreatofviolence,theconstanthumiliations,largeandsmall,theuncertaintythatyoucouldsupportafamily,thegnawingdoubtsbornoftheJimCrowculturethattoldyoueverydaythatsomehowyouwereinferior,thetemptationtoshrinkfromtheworld,toacceptyourplace,toavoidrisks,tobeafraid—thattemptationwasnecessarilystrong.
Andyet,here,underthetutelageofmenlikeDr.Mays,youngMartinlearnedtobeunafraid.Andhe,inturn,taughtotherstobeunafraid.Andovertime,hetaughtanationtobeunafraid.Andoverthelast50years,thankstothemoralforceofDr.KingandaMosesgenerationthatovercametheirfearandtheircynicismandtheirdespair,barriershavecometumblingdown,andnewdoorsofopportunityhaveswungopen,andlawsandheartsandmindshavebeenchangedtothepointwheresomeonewholooksjustlikeyoucansomehowcometoserveasPresidentoftheseUnitedStatesofAmerica.(Applause.)
Sothehistoryweshareshouldgiveyouhope.Thefutureweshareshouldgiveyouhope.You’regraduatingintoanimprovingjobmarket.You’relivinginatimewhenadvancesintechnologyandcommunicationputtheworldatyourfingertips.YourgenerationisuniquelypoisedforsuccessunlikeanygenerationofAfricanAmericansthatcamebeforeit.
Butthatdoesn’tmeanwedon’thavework—becauseifwe’rehonestwithourselves,weknowthattoofewofourbrothershavetheopportunitiesthatyou’vehadhereatMorehouse.
Introubledneighborhoodsallacrossthiscountry—manyofthemheavilyAfricanAmerican—toofewofourcitizenshaverolemodelstoguidethem.CommunitiesjustacouplemilesfrommyhouseinChicago,communitiesjustacouplemilesfromhere—they’replaceswherejobsarestilltooscarceandwagesarestilltoolow;
whereschoolsareunderfundedandviolenceispervasive;
wheretoomanyofourmenspendtheiryouthnotbehindadeskinaclassroom,buthangingoutonthestreetsorbroodingbehindajailcell.
Myjob,asPresident,istoadvocateforpoliciesthatgeneratemoreopportunityforeverybody—policiesthatstrengthenthemiddleclassandgivemorepeoplethechancetoclimbtheirwayintothemiddleclass.Policiesthatcreatemoregoodjobsandreducepoverty,andeducatemorechildren,andgivemorefamiliesthesecurityofhealthcare,andprotectmoreofourchildrenfromthehorrorsofgunviolence.That’smyjob.Thosearemattersofpublicpolicy,anditisimportantforallofus—black,whiteandbrown—toadvocateforanAmericawhereeverybodyhasgotafairshotinlife.Notjustsome.Notjustafew.(Applause.)
Butalongwithcollectiveresponsibilities,wehaveindividualresponsibilities.Therearesomethings,asblackmen,wecanonlydoforourselves.Therearesomethings,asMorehouseMen,thatyouareobligedtodoforthosestillleftbehind.AsMorehouseMen,younowwieldsomethingevenmorepowerfulthanthediplomayou’reabouttocollect—andthat’sthepowerofyourexample.
SowhatIaskofyoutodayisthesamethingIaskofeverygraduatingclassIaddress:
Usethatpowerforsomethinglargerthanyourself.LiveuptoPresidentMays’schallenge.Be“sensitivetothewrongs,thesufferings,andtheinjusticesofsociety.”Andbe“willingtoacceptresponsibilityforcorrecting(those)ills.”
IknowthatsomeofyoucametoMorehousefromcommunitieswherelifewasaboutkeepingyourheaddownandlookingoutforyourself.Maybeyoufeellikeyouescaped,andnowyoucantakeyourdegreeandgetthatfancyjobandthenicehouseandthenicecar—andneverlookback.Anddon’tgetmewrong—withallthosestudentloansyou’vehadtotakeout,Iknowyou’vegottoearnsomemoney.Withdoorsopentoyouthatyourparentsandgrandparentscouldnotevenimagine,nooneexpectsyoutotakeavowofpoverty.ButIwillsayitbetraysapovertyofambitionifallyouthinkaboutiswhatgoodsyoucanbuyinsteadofwhatgoodyoucando.(Applause.)
So,yes,gogetthatlawdegree.Butifyoudo,askyourselfiftheonlyoptionistodefendtherichandthepowerful,orifyoucanalsofindsometimetodefendthepowerless.Sure,gogetyourMBA,orstartthatbusiness.Weneedblackbusinessesoutthere.Butaskyourselveswhatbroaderpurposeyourbusinessmightserve,inputtingpeopletowork,ortransforminganeighborhood.ThemostsuccessfulCEOsIknowdidn’tstartoutintentjustonmakingmoney—rather,theyhadavisionofhowtheirproductorservicewouldchangethings,andthemoneyfollowed.(Applause.)
Someofyoumaybeheadedtomedicalschooltobecomedoctors.Butmakesureyouhealfolksinunderservedcommunitieswhoreallyneedit,too.Forgenerations,certaingroupsinthiscountry—especiallyAfricanAmericans—havebeendesperateinneedofaccesstoquality,affordablehealthcare.Andasasociety,we’refinallybeginningtochangethat.Thoseofyouwhoareundertheageof26alreadyhavetheoptiontostayonyourparent’shealthcareplan.Butallofyouareheadingintoaneconomywheremanyyoungpeopleexpectnotonlytohavemultiplejobs,butmultiplecareers.
SostartingOctober1st,becauseoftheAffordableCareAct—otherwiseknownasObamacare—(applause)—you’llbeabletoshopforaquality,affordableplanthat’syoursandtravelswithyou—aplanthatwillinsurenotonlyyourhealth,butyourdreamsif
