Geneticallymodified(转基因的)foodshavebecomeafocuspointofagriculturethroughoutthenewstoday.Thishasaneffectonmanydifferentaspectsoftheagricultureworld.Fromtheseeddealer,tothefarmerthatbuystheseed,totheworkersthatthefarmersellsgrainsto,allareaffectedbythenewtechnologiesthatareinvolvedinthispartofproductionagriculture.
Geneticallymodifiedfoodshavecomeunderheavyfirelately.Therearesomecountriesthatareagainstbuyingthesetypesoffoods.TheyarebeingtestedforsafetybythebestscientificexpertsinEurope,theUSandtherestoftheworld.Theyarenotforsaleuntiltheyhavegonethroughthiscompletesafetyprocess.Sincetheyarenewproducts,andanyslightproblemwiththemcouldaffectawholecountry,thesetestsareverynecessary.
ThesesafetytestsarecarriedoutbecauseofthenewrulesthatweremadewiththeNovelFoodsRegulation.BeguninMayof1997,theNovelFoodsRegulationsetupanEU-widepre-marketsystemforallnovelfoods.AnovelfoodisdescribedasonethathasnotbeeneatenbyEUconsumerswidelyinthepast.BysettingupthisprogramtheEUhopestokeepitsconsumerssafefromanypossiblesideeffectsofanynewfoodproducts.
Thereareavarietyofwaysinwhichgeneticmodificationhashelpedfoodproducers.Theycanimprovethenutritionalvalueorthestorageconditionsofthefood.Todaythereareonlytwogeneticallymodifiedfoodsthathavebeenallowedforuse—theseareGMsoybeanandGMmaize.
Despiteanysafetychecks,manypeoplearestillcautiousabouteatinggeneticallymodifiedfoods.Byprovidingthesepeoplewiththenecessaryinformation,wecanallowthemtomakedecisionsaboutthesefoods.
