Myeperiencewasbynomeansuniversal.ManyAmericansaretaughtbytheirparentsthattheonlypurposeinlifeistoattainmoneyandpower.Asagoal,thisseemsmucheasierandclearerthanfinding“happiness”or“gentleness”.Theresultofthisupbringingisthatmanyofmyclassmatesdidnotspecialieinanyparticularsill,ratherassumingthatsomethingwouldmagicallyhappentoovercometheirproblems.Theyoftengetarealshocwhentheyenterthe“realworld”andfindthattheiroptionsareverylimited.Manyofmyfriendshavetaenjobsaswaitersorcoosaftergraduating,orhavemovedbacinwiththeirparents.
Mylifeontheboatishardattimes,especiallyduringstorms.Butthisismysmallattempttobehappyonmyown.I’mnotbuyingintomynation’sideaoflimitlesspossibilitiesbecauseIfeelthatstopsthegrowthofmanyoftoday’syouth.

graduateinmathematics.Onesuggestionistheoldideathatweonlyuseasmallpercentageofourbrainsanyway—perhapsaslittleas10percent.Butmorerecentresearchshowsthisideaisamisunderstandingdatingfromresearchinthe1930sinwhichthefunctionsoflargeareasofthebraincouldnotbedeterminedandwerenamed“silent”,whileinfacttheyarelinedwithimportantfunctionsliespeechandabstractthining.
TheotherinterestingthingaboutLorber’sfindingsisthattheyremindusofthesecretofmemory.Atfirstitwasthoughtthatthereisapartinthebrainformemory,liethememorychipsinaPC.Butfurtherresearchofthebrainhasturnedupthesurprisingfactthatmemorydoesnotdependonanyparticularareainthebrain.Asonescientistputit,“Memoryiseverywhereinthebrainandnowhere.”
