NowadaystheOpenUniversityinBritainplaysanimportantroleinBritisheducation.In1963theleaderoftheLabourPartymadeaspeechexplainingaplanfora'
universityoftheairaneducationalinstitutionwhichwouldmakeuseoftelevision,radioandcorrespondencecoursestogiveeducationalopportunitytothosepeoplewho,foronereasonoranother,didnothaveachancetoreceivefurthereducation.Butatthattimemanypeoplelaughedattheplan.
By1969theplanwaswelladvancedandbyAugust1970theOpenUniversity,asitisnowcalled,hadreceivedfortythousandapplications.Butonlytwenty-fourthousandcouldbeacceptedthenforthefourintroductorycourses:
socialsciences,arts,scienceandmathematics.Manyclerks,farmworkers,housewives,teachers,policemenattendedthefirstclassovertheradiooronTVinJanuary1971.Meanwhilestudycentersweresetupalloverthecountrysothatstudentscouldspendoneweekayearatoneoftheuniversity'
ssummerschools.
Itisprobablythecheapestandmostfar-reachingmethodtopromoteeducation.
