BACKGROUNDANDVOCABULARYactivitiesprovidestudentswithtoolsforunderstandingthefirstreadingselection.Laterintheunit,studentsreviewthisvocabularyandlearnrelatedidioms,collocations,andwordforms.Thishelpsthemexplorecontentandexpandtheirwrittenandspokenlanguage.
2FOCUSONREADING
Thissectionfocusesonunderstandingtwocontrastingreadingselections.
READINGONEisaliteraryselection,academicarticle,newspiece,blog,orothergenrethataddressestheunittopic.Inlevels1to3,readingsarebasedonauthenticmaterials.Inlevels4and5,allthereadingsareauthentic.
READINGTWOoffersanotherperspectiveonthetopicandusuallybelongstoanothergenre.Again,inlevels1to3,thereadingsarebasedonauthenticmaterials,andinlevels4and5,theyareauthentic.Thissecondreadingisfollowedbyanactivitythatchallengesstudentstoquestionideastheyformedaboutthefirstreading,andtouseappropriatelanguageskillstoanalyzeandexplaintheirideas.
INTEGRATEREADINGSONEANDTWOpresentsculminatingactivities.Studentsarechallengedtotakewhattheyhavelearned,organizetheinformation,andsynthesizeitinameaningfulway.Studentspracticeskillsthatareessentialforsuccessinauthenticacademicsettingsandonstandardizedtests.
3FOCUSONWRITING
Thissectionemphasizesdevelopmentofproductiveskillsforwriting.Itincludessectionsonvocabulary,grammar,andthewritingprocess.
TheVOCABULARYsectionleadsstudentsfromreviewingtheunitvocabulary,topracticingandexpandingtheiruseofit,andthenworkingwithit—usingitcreativelyinboththissectionandinthefinalwritingtask.
