Howwe'llearnmoneyinafuturewithoutjobs
I'mgoingtobeginwithascaryquestion:
Areweheadedtowardafuturewithoutjobs?
Theremarkableprogressthatwe'reseeing intechnologieslikeself-drivingcars hasledtoanexplosionofinterestinthisquestion, butbecauseit'ssomethingthat'sbeenasked somanytimesinthepast, maybewhatweshouldreallybeasking iswhetherthistimeisreallydifferent.
Thefearthatautomationmightdisplaceworkers andpotentiallyleadtolotsofunemployment goesbackataminimum200yearstotheLudditerevoltsinEngland. Andsincethen,thisconcernhascomeupagainandagain.
I'mgoingtoguess thatmostofyouhaveprobablyneverheardoftheTripleRevolutionreport, butthiswasaveryprominentreport. Itwasputtogetherbyabrilliantgroupofpeople-- itactuallyincludedtwoNobellaureates-- andthisreportwaspresentedtothePresidentoftheUnitedStates,
anditarguedthattheUSwasonthebrinkofeconomicandsocialupheaval becauseindustrialautomationwasgoingtoputmillionsofpeople outofwork. Now,thatreportwasdeliveredtoPresidentLyndonJohnson inMarchof1964.
Sothat'snowover50years, and,ofcourse,thathasn'treallyhappened. Andthat'sbeenthestoryagainandagain.
Thisalarmhasbeenraisedrepeatedly, butit'salwaysbeenafalsealarm. Andbecauseit'sbeenafalsealarm, it'sledtoaveryconventionalwayofthinkingaboutthis. Andthatsaysessentiallythatyes, technologymaydevastateentireindustries.
Itmaywipeoutwholeoccupationsandtypesofwork. Butatthesametime,ofcourse, progressisgoingtoleadtoentirelynewthings. Sotherewillbenewindustriesthatwillariseinthefuture, andthoseindustries,ofcourse,willhavetohirepeople.
There'llbenewkindsofworkthatwillappear, andthosemightbethingsthattodaywecan'treallyevenimagine. Andthathasbeenthestorysofar, andit'sbeenapositivestory.
Itturnsoutthatthenewjobsthathavebeencreated havegenerallybeenalotbetterthantheoldones. Theyhave,forexample,beenmoreengaging. They'vebeeninsafer,morecomfortableworkenvironments, and,ofcourse,they'vepaidmore. Soithasbeenapositivestory.
That'sthewaythingshaveplayedoutsofar. Butthereisoneparticularclassofworker forwhomthestoryhasbeenquitedifferent. Fortheseworkers, technologyhascompletelydecimatedtheirwork, anditreallyhasn'tcreatedanynewopportunitiesatall. Andtheseworkers, ofcourse, arehorses.
SoIcanaskaveryprovocativequestion:
Isitpossiblethatatsomepointinthefuture, asignificantfractionofthehumanworkforceisgoingtobemaderedundant inthewaythathorseswere?
Now,youmighthaveaveryvisceral,reflexivereactiontothat.
Youmightsay,"That'sabsurd. Howcanyoupossiblycomparehumanbeingstohorses?
" Horses,ofcourse,areverylimited, andwhencarsandtrucksandtractorscamealong, horsesreallyhadnowhereelsetoturn. People,ontheotherhand,areintelligent; wecanlearn,wecanadapt.
Andintheory, thatoughttomeanthatwecanalwaysfindsomethingnewtodo, andthatwecanalwaysremainrelevanttothefutureeconomy.
Buthere'sthereallycriticalthingtounderstand. Themachinesthatwillthreatenworkersinthefuture arereallynothinglikethosecarsandtrucksandtractors thatdisplacedhorses. Thefutureisgoingtobefullofthinking,learning,adaptingmachines.
Andwhatthatreallymeans isthattechnologyisfinallybeginningtoencroach onthatfundamentalhumancapability-- thethingthatmakesussodifferentfromhorses, andtheverythingthat, sofar, hasallowedustostayaheadofthemarchofprogress andremainrelevant, and,
infact,indispensabletotheeconomy. Sowhatisitthatisreallysodifferent abouttoday'sinformationtechnology relativetowhatwe'veseeninthepast?
Iwouldpointtothreefundamentalthings.
Thefirstthingisthatwehaveseenthisongoingprocess ofexponentialacceleration. IknowyouallknowaboutMoore'slaw, butinfact,it'smorebroad-basedthanthat; itextendsinmanycases,forexample,tosoftware, itextendstocommunications,bandwidthandsoforth.
Butthereallykeythingtounderstand isthatthisaccelerationhasnowbeengoingonforareallylongtime. Infact,it'sbeengoingonfordecades. Ifyoumeasurefromthelate1950s, whenthefirstintegratedcircuitswerefabricated, we'veseensomethingontheorderof30doublingsincomputationalpower sincethen.
That'sjustanextraordinarynumberoftimestodoubleanyquantity, andwhatitreallymeans isthatwe'renowatapointwherewe'regoingtosee justanextraordinaryamountofabsoluteprogress, and,ofcourse,thingsaregoingtocontinuetoalsoaccelerate fromthispoint.
Soaswelookforwardtothecomingyearsanddecades, Ithinkthatmeansthatwe'regoingtoseethings thatwe'rereallynotpreparedfor. We'regoingtoseethingsthatastonishus.
Thesecondkeything isthatthemachinesare,inalimitedsense,beginningtothink. Andbythis,Idon'tmeanhuman-levelAI, orsciencefictionartificialintelligence; Isimplymeanthatmachinesandalgorithmsaremakingdecisions.
They'resolvingproblems,andmostimportantly,they'relearning. Infact,ifthere'sonetechnologythatistrulycentraltothis andhasreallybecomethedrivingforcebehindthis, it'smachinelearning, whichisjustbecomingthisincrediblypowerful, disruptive,scalabletechnology.
OneofthebestexamplesI'veseenofthatrecently waswhatGoogle'sDeepMinddivisionwasabletodo withitsAlphaGosystem. Now,thisisthesystemthatwasabletobeatthebestplayerintheworld attheancientgameofGo. Now,atleasttome, therearetwothingsthatreallystandoutaboutthegameofGo.
Oneisthatasyou'replayingthegame, thenumberofconfigurationsthattheboardcanbein isessentiallyinfinite. Thereareactuallymorepossibilitiesthanthereareatomsintheuniverse.
Sowhatthatmeansis, you'renevergoingtobeabletobuildacomputertowinatthegameofGo thewaychesswasapproached, forexample, whichisbasicallytothrowbrute-forcecomputationalpoweratit.
Soclearly,amuchmoresophisticated,thinking-likeapproachisneeded. Thesecondthingthatreallystandsoutisthat, ifyoutalktooneofthechampionshipGoplayers, thispersoncannotnecessarilyevenreallyarticulatewhatexactlyitis they'rethinkingaboutastheyplaythegame. It'softensomethingthat'sveryintuitive, it'salmostjustlikeafeelingaboutwhichmovetheyshouldmake.
Sogiventhosetwoqualities, IwouldsaythatplayingGoataworldchampionlevel reallyoughttobesomethingthat'ssafefromautomation, andthefactthatitisn'tshouldreallyraiseacautionaryflagforus.
Andthereasonisthatwetendtodrawaverydistinctline, andononesideofthatlineareallthejobsandtasks thatweperceiveasbeingonsomelevelfundamentallyroutineandrepetitive andpredictable. Andweknowthatthesejobsmightbeindifferentindustries, theymightbein differentoccupationsandatdifferentskilllevels,
butbecausetheyareinnatelypredictable, weknowthey'reprobablyatsomepointgoingtobesusceptible tomachinelearning, andtherefore,toautomation. Andmakenomistake--that'salotofjobs. That'sprobablysomethingontheorderofroughlyhalf thejobsintheeconomy.
Butthenontheothersideofthatline, wehaveallthejobsthatrequiresomecapability thatweperceiveasbeinguniquelyhuman, andthesearethejobsthatwethinkaresafe. Now,basedonwhatIknowaboutthegameofGo, Iwould'veguessedthatitreallyoughttobeonthesafesideofthatline.
Butthefactthatitisn't,andthatGooglesolvedthisproble
