TheChinesedumplingnowenjoysworldwidepopularity.ItshistorycanbetracedbacktoSouthandNorthDynasty(420–589).Thiskindoftraditionhasameaningofchangingofyears,because“jiao”hasthemeaningofchanging.Insomeplaces,peopleevenputacleancoinintothedumplings,becausetheythinktheonewhoeatsthecoinwillbecomewealthier.
Fish:
InChina,thereisablessingspeechas‘NianNianYouYu’,whichmeans‘Mayyouhavesurplusesandbountifulharvestseveryyear.’InsouthernChina,somepeoplejusteatthemiddlepartofthefishontheNewYearEve,leavingtheheadandtailtothenextdaytosymbolizecompleteness.
