Geographicisolationcreatesopportunitiesfornewspeciestodevelop,butitdoesnotnecessarilyleadtonewspeciesbecausespeciationoccursonlywhenthegenepoolundergoesenoughchangestoestablishreproductivebarriersbetweentheisolatedpopulationanditsparentpopulation.Thelikelihoodofallopatricspeciationincreaseswhenapopulationissmallaswellasisolated,makingitmorelikelythanalargepopulationtohaveitsgenepoolchangedsubstantially.Forexample,inlessthantwomillionyears,smallpopulationsofstrayanimalsandplantsfromtheSouthAmericanmainlandthatmanagedtocolonizetheGalapagosIslandsgaverisetoallthespeciesthatnowinhabittheislands.
Whenoceanicislandsarefarenoughaparttopermitpopulationstoevolveinisolation,butcloseenoughtoallowoccasionaldispersionstooccur,theyareeffectivelyoutdoorlaboratoriesofevolution.TheGalapagosislandchainisoneoftheworld’sgreatestshowcasesofevolution.Eachislandwasbornfromunderwatervolcanoesandwasgraduallycoveredbyorganismsderivedfromstraysthatrodetheoceancurrentsandwindsfromotherislandsandcontinents.Organismscanalsobecarriedtoislandsbyotherorganisms,suchasseabirdsthattravellongdistanceswithseedsclingingtotheirfeathers.
ThespeciesontheGalapagosIslandstoday,mostofwhichoccurnowhereelse,descendedfromorganismsthatfloated,flew,orwereblownovertheseafromtheSouthAmericanmainland.Forinstance,theGalapagosislandchainhasatotalofthirteenspeciesofcloselyrelatedbirdscalledGalapagosfinches.Thesebirdshavemanysimilaritiesbutdifferintheirfeedinghabitsandtheirbeaktype,whichiscorrelatedwithwhattheyeat.Accumulatedevidenceindicatesthatallthirteenfinchspeciesevolvedfromasinglesmallpopulationofancestralbirdsthatcolonizedoneoftheislands.Completelyisolatedontheislandaftermigratingfromthemainland,thefounderpopulationmayhaveundergonesignificantchangesinitsgenepoolandbecomeanewspecies.■Later,afewindividualsofthisnewspeciesmayhavebeenblownbystormstoaneighboringisland.■Isolatedonthissecondisland,thesecondfounderpopulationcouldhaveevolvedintoasecondnewspecies,whichcouldlaterrecolonizetheislandfromwhichitsfoundingpopulationemigrated.■TodayeachGalapagosislandhasmultiplespeciesoffinches,withasmanyastenonsomeislands.■
