WiththedevelopmentoftheReform-OpeningPolicyandtherapiddevelopmentoftherelationshipwiththeoutsideworld,communicationinEnglishhasbecomeamorecrucialfactorinsocialorganization,andisregardedasthemaintargetofEnglishlearners.English,asaninternationallanguage,playsanevermoresignificantroleindailylife.Giventheimportanceoflisteninginlanguagelearningandteaching,itisessentialforlanguageteacherstohelplearnersbecomeeffectivelistenersandforlanguagelearnerstopaygreaterattentiontolisteningcomprehension.MostEnglishlistenersbelievethatlisteningcomprehensionisonlypayingattentiontowhatsomeoneissayingortosoundsthattheycanhear.Theyregardtheprocessoflisteningcomprehensionaspassive,butitisactuallyaveryactiveandcomplicatedprocessinvolvingmanyfactors,suchasthespeakers’pronunciation,thelisteners’vocabularyandabilitytocomprehendmeaning.Inordertoimprovetheirlisteningability,Englishlearnersmustnotonlymakeadiligentefforttolistentospeakers’words,butalsomakeuseofalltheirpriorknowledgeofEnglish.ThemainobstaclestoeffectiveEnglishlisteningcomprehensionwhichmustbeaddressedtoimprovelisteningcomprehensioninEnglishareintheareasoflimitedphoneticknowledge,quantityofmasteredvocabulary,limitedunderstandinginculturalbackgroundandsomespecificpsychologicalobstacles.

theycannotefficientlycommunicateandcooperatewithothersunlesstheyunderstandthosethattheyarespeakingwithandlisteningto.
InthepracticeofEnglishteachinginChina,listeninghasfailedtoreceiveasmuchattentionasreading,writingandtranslation.Whatmostlisteningcomprehensionteachersdoinclassismerelyplaylisteningmaterialsandchecktheanswerstothelisteningexercises,somoststudentslearnlittleinclass,andlisteningcomprehensiondoesnotmarkedlyincrease.Hence,listeningisaveryvulnerableareaformostEnglishlearnersinChina.ItisnecessarytofosterEnglishlearners’abilitiesinreadingandwritingaswellaslistening,butimprovinglisteningabilityisanurgentproblemthatneedstoberesolvednow.……

Giventheimportanceoflisteninginlanguagelearningandteaching,itisessentialforlanguageteacherstohelplearnersbecomeeffectivelistenersandforlanguagelearnerstopaygreaterattentiontolisteningcomprehension.MostEnglishlistenersbelievethatlisteningcomprehensionisonlypayingattentiontowhatsomeoneissayingortosoundsthattheycanhear.Theyregardtheprocessoflisteningcomprehensionaspassiveandnotabletobecontrolledbythemselvesaslisteners.Inordertobetterunderstandthenatureoflisteningcomprehension,allEnglishlearnersneedtounderstandthedefinitionoflisteningcomprehension;
thiswillhelpthemtobetterrecognizetheimportanceoflisteningcomprehension.
