Tesswasborninapoorfamily.Oneday,herfatherwastoldthathewasthelinealdescendantsofancientfamilyoftheD’Urbervilles,thenheturnedhisheadup.HeandhisvainandvulgarwifedecidedtosentTesstoarichfamilyalsocalledD’Urbervilles’sdescendant.Inordertogetsupporttheirsocietystatus,Tesswenttotherichfamily,afterthatbeingrapedandpregnant.Thechildwasborn,thendiedsoon.Severalyearslater,shelefthometoamilkfactorytowork.TheredidshemeethertrueloveAngelClare.Theyfellinloveandengaged.ShegreatlyadmiredAngelClareandlovedhim.ButAngeldidnotlearnofherpreviousrelationshipwithAlecuntiltheirweddingnight.

Victorianliteratureingeneraltruthfullyrepresentstherealityandspiritofthisagelong—realistic,thicklyplotted,andcrowdedwithcharacters.Hardy’sexpressionofthetruthofthisagewhichcamefromtheagitationoflifeandfatalismofhumanbeingalsohadahighplaceinWesternliterature.
ThetragicideainHardy’snovelsspringanddevelopinformandconnotation.ThetragedyconsciousnessinHardy’snovelsoriginatedfromWesterntraditionaltragicspiritwhichwasfullofrationalismandprofoundreflectiononthecontradictionsofhumansociety.Anditalsorevealedanineluctableandinevitableconditionalityoffate.Thatistosay,theheroesorheroineswouldslipintothetragicpathoflifeintheendinWesternliteraturenomatterwhethertheylikedornot,orwheretheyhided.Tragedywastheirfinalarrangement.
