JohnWesleyPowell(1834—1902)wasafamousexploreroftheAmericanWest.Whenhewasyoung,hismotherputhimundertheguidanceofGeorgeCrookham,aself-taughtscientist,fromwhomhereceivedawidebutinformaleducation.YoungJohnlearnedmanythingsaboutthenaturalsciences.Buthisfatherpreferredhimtostudyreligion.Theargumentcontinuedforthreeyears.ThenJohndecidedtoleavehometoseekfurthereducation.Hesoondiscoveredthatheknewmoreaboutsciencethananyteacherhemet.Herealizedthattheonlygoodscientificeducationinthecountrycamefromcollegesintheeast,likeHarvardandYale.Buthewastoopoortogotothem,sohegotworkasaschoolteacherinIllinois.Wheneverpossible,hewentonscientifictripsofhisown.
In1861,civilwarbrokeoutintheUnitedStates.JohnjoinedtheUnionforcesoftheNorth.AtthebattleofShilohPowelllosthisrightarm.Despitehisdisability,hebeganhisfamousexplorationoftheColoradoRiveronMay24,1869.
ItwasoneofthegreatesttripsofdiscoveryinthehistoryofAmerica.Neverbeforehadanywhitementravelledtothatarea.Thetripwasfarmoredangerousthanexpected.Theriverswerefilledwithrockyareasandwaterfalls.Sometimes,theboatsoverturnedorbrokeintopiecesagainstbigrocks.Allalongtheway,Powellmeasureddistances,temperatures,heights,depthsandcurrents.Heexaminedsoils,rocksandplantlife.Powell’sexplorationsledtothecreationoftheUSGeologicalSurvey,whichbecameresponsibleforallmappingandscientificprogramsofAmericanlands.
Powell’sscientificstudiesofwesternlandsshapedhisideasofhowthoselandsshouldbeused.Hesuggestedprogramstocontrolbothcropfarmingandcattleraising.Hewasespeciallyconcernedaboutwatersupplies.Manyofhisideaswererejectedatfirstandwerenotsignedintolawuntilyearsafterhisdeathbecausetheywerefaraheadofhistime.(373W)
