Theterm“IMMUNITY”,originally,andmightstillbeconsideredbypeople,meanstheabilityofhosttoresistancetoinfectiousdisease.However,themodernconceptofimmunityisconferringthehostthespecificfunctiontorecognizeandneutralizeand/oreliminateforeignmaterialsorsubstances(biologicalornon-biological,andevensometimeselftissuecomponents)tomaintainthehomeostasisofhostinternalenvironment.
Immunityincludesinnateimmunityandacquiredimmunity,theformerisinherent,veryquick,andnon-specificrespondtoinvasivepathogens;
whereasthelatterisacquiredandadaptedafterbirthofhost,andinducedspecificrespondtoforeignmaterial(infectiousornoninfectious).
TheImmunologyisastudytofocusingonhowofhosttorecognitionofselfandnon-self,andhowoftheresponsetoforeignmaterial(Antigen)and
