Thestoryofthesong“HappyBirthdaytoYou”beganasasweetone,butlaterbecamebitter.Twosisters,MildredHill,ateacheratakindergarten,andDr.PattyHill,theprincipalofthesameschool,wroteasongforthechildren,entitled“GoodMorningtoAll”.WhenMildredcombinedhermusicaltalentswithhersister’sknowledgeintheareaofkindergarteneducation,“GoodMorningtoAll”wassuretobeasuccess.Thesisterspublishedthesonginacollectionentitled“SongStoriesoftheKindergarten”in1893.Thirty-oneyearslater,afterDr.PattyHillbecametheheadoftheDepartmentofKindergartenEducationatColumbiaUniversity’sTeacher’sCollege,agentlemanbythenameRobertColemanpublishedthesong,withoutthesisters’permission.Headdedasecondpart,whichisthefamiliar“HappyBirthdaytoYou”.Mr.Coleman’sadditionofthesecondpartmadethesongpopularandeventuallythesisters’originalfirstpartdisappeared.“HappyBirthdaytoYou”hadaltogetherreplacedthesisters’originalsong“GoodMorningtoAll”.In1916PattytooklegalactionagainstMr.Coleman.Incourt,shesucceededinprovingthattheyweretherealownersofthesong.
