OnApril30,1970,USPresidentRichardNixonannouncedanescalationofthewarinVietnamwithamilitaryinvasionofCambodia,whichneighborsVietnam.Atthattime,thewarwasextremelyunpopularwiththepublicandmanypeoplewerefrustratedandangeredbythisnew
developmen—especiallystudents.ManypeoplehadbeenencouragedbyNixon'
spromisetwoyearsearliertoendthewar,but,in1970,therewasstillnoendinsight.
OnMay1,studentsatKentStateUniversityinKent,OhioprotestedagainsttheAmericaninvasionofCambodiaandwerecallingforanendtothewar.Thecampusprotestwaspeaceful,butemotionsgrewthroughouttheday,andriotssooneruptedinthetown'
sstreetsthatnight.Inresponse,thegovernorsentNationalGuardtroopstotheKentStateUniversitycampustostoptheriotsandprotests.
Smallprotestscontinuedoverthenexttwodays,andthen,onthemorningofMay4,approximately2,000studentsgatheredinthecenterofcampustoprotestboththewarandthepreseneeofsoldiersattheirschool.Thesoldiersorderedthestudentstodisperseandreturntotheirdorms.Whentheyrefused,thesoldiersbeganfiringteargasintothecrowd.
