ResearchersattheInstituteofEducation(IOE)havefoundthatthemostcrazychildhoodreadersscorefarhigheronvocabularytests30yearslater.Thenewstudysuggeststhatchildrenwhoreadforpleasurecarrytheintellectual(智力的)benefitswiththemfarintoadulthood.

Thosewhohadregularlyreadforpleasureat10scored67percentintheage42vocabularytest,whileinfrequentchildhoodreadersscoredonly51percent.
TheIOEstudyalsofoundthatwhatpeoplechosetoreadasadultsmatteredasmuchashowoftentheyread.Thegreatestimprovementsbetweenages16and42weremadebyreadersof‘elegant’fictionssuchasBookerPrizewinningnovels.Andtheyfoundthatreadersofqualitynewspapers,includingonlineversions,mademoreprogressinvocabularythroughouttheirlivesthanthosewhoreadtabloids.
Inaddition,generallyspeaking,theadultreaderswhoespeciallyreadbroadsheets(宽幅印刷品)scored76percentontheassessmentcomparedto57percentamongstthosewhodidn’t.
