neuroscienssaythattheteenagebrainisprettyweird,ourprefrontalcortexisunderdeveloped,butweactuallyhavemoreneuronsthans,whichiswhywecanbesocreative,andimpulsiveandmoodyandgetbummedout.
butwhatbumsmeoutistoknowthat,alotofkidstodayarejustwishingtobehappy,tobehealthy,tobesafe,notbullied,andbelovedforwhotheyare.soitseemstomewhenssay,whatdoyouwanttobewhenyougrowup?
theyjustassumethatyou’llautoticallybehappyandhealthy.
well,ybethat’snotthecase,gotoschool,gotocollege,getajob,getrried,boom,thenyou’llbehappy,right?
youdon’tseemtokelearninghowtobehappyandhealthyapriorityinourschools,it’sseparatefromschools.andforsomekids,itdoesn’texistsatall?
butwhatifwedidn’tkeitseparate?
whatifwebasededucationonthestudyandpractiofbeinghappyandhealthy,becausethat’swhatitis,apracti,andapractiatthat?
educationisimportant,butwhyisbeinghappyandhealthynotconsiderededucation,ijustdon’tgetit.soi’vebeenstudyingthescienofbeinghappyandhealthy.itreallyesdowntopracticingtheseeightthings.exercise,tandnutrition,timeinnature,contribution,servitoothers,relationships,recreation,relaxationandstressnagement,andreligiousorspiritualinvolvement,yes,gotthatone.

hisresponsewasnosurprise,itwasessentiallyno.buthedidsaythatnypeopledotrytogetthiskindofeducationoutsideofthetraditionalarena,throughreadingandpractissuchasmeditationoryoga.
butwhatithoughtwashisbestresponsewasthat,muchofeducationisorientedforbetterorworsetowardsalivingratherthanalife.
inXX,sirkenrobinsongavethemostpopulartedtalkofalltime.schoolskillcreativity.hismessageisthatcreativityisasimportantasliteracy,andweshouldtreatitwiththesamestatus.
alotofparentswatchedthosevideos,someofthoseparentslikeminecounteditasoneofthereasonstheyfeltconfidenttopulltheirkidsfromtraditionalschooltotrysomethingdifferent.irealizedi’mpartofthissll,butgrowingrevolutionofkidswhoaregoingabouttheireducationdifferently,andyouknowwhat?
itfreaksalotofpeopleout.
eventhoughiwasonlynine,whenmyparentspulledmeoutoftheschoolsystem,icanstillremembermymombeingintearswhensomeofherfriendstoldhershewascrazyanditwasastupididea.
lookingback,i’mthankfulshedidn’tcavetopeerpressure,andithinksheistoo.so,outofthe200millionpeoplethathavewatchedsirkenrobinson’stalk,whyaren’ttheremorekidslikemeoutthere?
shanemonkeyismyhero.ilovedhimbecausehewastheworld’sbestskier.butthen,onedayirealizedwhatireallylovedaboutshane,hewasahacker.notaputerhacker,hehackedskiing.hiscreativityandinventionsdeskiingwhatitistoday,andwhyilovetoski.alotofpeoplethinkofhackersasgeekyputernerdswholiveintheirparent’sbasementandspreadputerviruses,butidon’tseeitthatway.
hackersareinnovators,hackersarepeoplewhochallengeandchangethesystemstokethemworkdifferently,tokethemworkbetter,it’sjusthowtheythink,it’samindset.
i’mgrowingupinaworldthatneedsmorepeoplewiththehackermindset,andnotjustfortechnology,everythingisupforbeinghacked,evenskiing,eveneducation.sowhetherit’sstevejobs,rkzuckerbergorshanemonkeyhavingthehackermindsetcanchangetheworld.
healthy,happy,creativityinthehackermindsetareallalargepartofmyeducation.icallithackschooling,idon’tuseanyoneparticularcurriculum,andi’mnotdedicatedtoanyoneparticularapproach,ihackmyeducation.
itakeadvantageofopportunitiesinmymunity,andthroughaworkofmyfriendsandfamily.itakeadvantageofopportunitiestoexperienwhati’mlearning,andi’mnotafraidtolookforshortcutsorhackstogetabetterfasterresult.it’slikearemixorash-upoflearning.it’sflexible,opportunistic,anditneverlosessightofhappy,healthyandcreativityapriority.
andhereisthecoolpart,becauseit’samindset,notasystem.hackschoolingcanbeusedanyone,eventraditionalschools.soowhatdoesmyschoollooklike?
well,itlookslikestarbucksalotofthetime,butlikemostkidsistudylotofth,scien,historyandwriting.ididn’tusedtoliketowritebecausemyteachersdemewriteaboutbutterfliesandrainbows,andiwantedtowriteaboutskiing.
itwasareliefformygoodfriend’smom,startedthesquawvalleykidsinstitute,whereigottowritethroughmyexperiensandmyinterests,while,connectingwithgreatspeakersfromaroundthenation,andthatsparkedmyloveofwriting.
irealizedthatonyou’remotivatedtolearnsomething,youcangetalotdoneinashortamountoftime,andonyourown,starbucksisprettygreatforthat.hackingphysicswasfun,welearnedallaboutnewtonandgalileo,andweexperiendsomebasicphysicsconptslikekiicenergythroughexperimentingandmistakes.
myfavoritewasthegiantnewton’scradlethatwedeoutofbowlingballs,noboeballs.weexperimentedwithlotofotherthingslikebowlingballsandeventgiantjawbreakers.
projectdiscovery’sropescourseisawesome,andslightlystressful.whenyou’re60feetofftheground,youhavetolearnhowtohandleyourfears,municateclearly,andmostimportantly,trusteachother.
munityorganizationsplayabigpartinmyeducation,highfivesfoundation’sbasicsprogrambeingawareandsafeincriticalsituations.wespentadaywiththesquawvalleyskipatroltolearnmoreaboutmountainsafety,thenthenextdayweswitchedtoscienofsnow,weatherandavalanches.
butmostimportantly,welearnedthatbaddecisionsputsyouandyourfriendsatrisk.youngshouldtalk,wellbringshistorytolife.youstudyafamouscharacterinhistory,andsothatyoucanstandonstageandperformasthatcharacter,andansweranyquestionabouttheirlifetime.
inthisphoto,youseealcaponeandbobrleygettinggrilledwithquestionsatthehistoricalpiper’soperahouseinvirginiacity,thesamestagewhereharryhoudinigothisstart.
timeandnatureisreallyimportanttome,it’scalm,quietandigettojustlogoutofreality.ispendonedayaweek,outsideallday.atmyfoxwalkersclasses,ourgoalistobeabletosurviveinthewildernesswithjustaknife.welearntolistentonature,welearntosenseoursurroundings,andi’vegainedaspiritualconnectiontonaturethat,ineverknewexisted.
butthebestpartisthatwegettokespears,bowsandarrows,fireswithjustabowdrillandsurvivalsheltersforthesnowynightswhenwecampout.hangingoutatthemomentfactorywheretheyhandkeskisanddesignclothes,hasreallyinspiredmetoonedayhavemyownbusiness.theguysatthefactoryshowedmewhyineedtobegoodatth,becreativeandgetgoodatselling.
soigotaninternshipatbigsharkprinttogetbetteratdesignandselling.betweenfetchinglunch,scrubbingtoiletsandbreakingtheirvacuumcleaner,i’mgettingtocontributetoclothingdesign,customizinghatsandsellingthem.thepeoplewhoworktherearehappy,healthy,creative,andstokedtobedoingwhattheyaredoing,thisisbyfarmyfavoriteclass.
so,thisiswhyi’mreallyhappy,powderdays,andit’sagoodmetaphorformylife,myeducation,myhackschooling.ifeveryoneskithismountain,likemostpeoplethinkofeducation,everyonewillbeskiingthesameline,probablythesafestandmostofthepowderwouldgountouched.
ilookatthis,andseeathousandpossibilities,droppingthecorners,shreddingthespine,lookingforachurningfromcliff-to-cliff.skiingtomeis,andsoismyeducation,it’saboutbeingcreative;
doingthingsdifferently,it’saboutmunityandhelpingeachother.it’saboutbeinghappyandhealthyamongmyverybestfriends.
