DescriptionofthePrinciple
TheME4054isasinglecelllithium-ionbatterychargerusingaconstant-current/constant-voltagealgorithm.Itcandeliverupto800mAofchargecurrent(usingagoodthermalPCBlayout)withafinalfloatvoltageaccuracyof±
1%.TheME4054includesaninternalP-channelpowerMOSFETandthermalregulationcircuitry.Noblockingdiodeorexternalcurrentsenseresistorisrequired;
thus,thebasicchargercircuitrequiresonlytwoexternalcomponents.Furthermore,theME4054iscapableofoperatingfromaUSBpowersource.
ChargeCycle
AchargecyclebeginswhenthevoltageattheVCCpinrisesabovetheUVLOthresholdlevelanda1%programresistorisconnectedfromthePROGpintogroundorwhenabatteryisconnectedtothechargeroutput.IftheBATpinislessthan,thechargerenterstricklechargemode.Inthismode,theME4054suppliesapproximately1/10theprogrammedchargecurrenttobringthebatteryvoltageuptoasafelevelforfullcurrentcharging.WhentheBATpinvoltagerisesabove,thechargerentersconstant-currentmode,wheretheprogrammedchargecurrentissuppliedtothebattery.WhentheBATpinapproachesthefinalfloatvoltage,theME4054entersconstant-voltagemodeandthechargecurrentbeginstodecrease.Whenthechargecurrentdropsto1/10oftheprogrammedvalue,thechargecycleends.
ChargeCurrent
ThechargecurrentisprogrammedusingasingleresistorfromthePROGpintoground.Thebatterychargecurrentis1000timesthecurrentoutofthePROGpin.Theprogramresistorandthechargecurrentarecalculatedusingthefollowingequations:

ThechargecurrentoutoftheBATpincanbedeterminedatanytimebymonitoringthePROGpinvoltageusingthefollowingequation:
IBAT=1000*VPROG/RPROG
Termination
Achargecycleisterminatedwhenthechargecurrentfallsto1/10ththeprogrammedvalueafterthefinalfloatvoltageisreached.Thisconditionisdetectedbyusinganinternal,filteredcomparatortomonitorthePROGpin.WhenthePROGpinvoltagefallsbelow100mVforlongerthantTERM(typically1ms),chargingisterminated.ThechargecurrentislatchedoffandtheME4054entersstandbymode,wheretheinputsupplycurrentdropsto200μA.(Note:
C/10terminationisdisabledintricklechargingandthermallimitingmodes).
Whencharging,transientloadsontheBATpincancausethePROGpintofallbelow100mVforshortperiodsoftimebeforetheDCchargecurrenthasdroppedto1/10ththeprogrammedvalue.The1msfiltertime(tTERM)ontheterminationcomparatorensuresthattransientloadsofthisnaturedonotresultinprematurechargecycletermination.Oncetheaveragechargecurrentdropsbelow1/10ththeprogrammedvalue,theME4054terminatesthechargecycleandceasestoprovideanycurrentthroughtheBATpin.Inthisstate,allloadsontheBATpinmustbesuppliedbythebattery.
TheME4054constantlymonitorstheBATpinvoltageinstandbymode.Ifthisvoltagedropsbelowtherechargethreshold(VRECHRG),anotherchargecyclebeginsandcurrentisonceagainsuppliedtothebattery.Tomanuallyrestartachargecyclewheninstandbymode,theinputvoltagemustberemovedandreapplied,orthechargermustbeshutdownandrestartedusingthePROGpin.Figure1showsthestatediagramofatypicalchargecycle.
StatusIndicator(CHRG)
Thechargestatusoutputhasthreedifferentstates:
strongpull-down(~10mA),weakpull-down(~20µ
A)andhighimpedance.Thestrongpull-downstateindicatesthattheME4054isinachargecycle.Oncethechargecyclehasterminated,thepinstateisdeterminedbyundervoltagelockoutconditions.Aweakpull-downindicatesthatVCCmeetstheUVLOconditionsandtheME4054isreadytocharge.HighimpedanceindicatesthattheME4054isinundervoltagelockoutmode:
eitherVCCislessthan100mVabovetheBATpinvoltageorinsufficientvoltageisappliedtotheVCCpin.Amicroprocessorcanbeusedtodistinguishbetweenthesethreestates—thismethodisdiscussedintheApplicationsInformationsection.
Limiting
Aninternalthermalfeedbackloopreducestheprogrammedchargecurrentifthedietemperatureattemptstoriseaboveapresetvalueofapproximately120°
C.ThisfeatureprotectstheME4054fromexcessivetemperatureandallowstheusertopushthelimitsofthepowerhandlingcapabilityofagivencircuitboardwithoutriskofdamagingtheME4054.Thechargecurrentcanbesetaccordingtotypical(notworst-case)ambienttemperaturewiththeassurancethatthechargerwillautomaticallyreducethecurrentinworst-caseconditions.ThinSOTpowerconsiderationsarediscussedfurtherintheApplicationsInformationsection.
Lockout(UVLO)
AninternalundervoltagelockoutcircuitmonitorstheinputvoltageandkeepsthechargerinshutdownmodeuntilVCCrisesabovetheundervoltagelockoutthreshold.TheUVLOcircuithasabuilt-inhysteresisof200mV.Furthermore,toprotectagainstreversecurrentinthepowerMOSFET,theUVLOcircuitkeepsthechargerinshutdownmodeifVCCfallstowithin30mVofthebatteryvoltage.IftheUVLOcomparatoristripped,thechargerwillnotcomeoutofshutdownmodeuntilVCCrises100mVabovethebatteryvoltage.
Shutdown
Atanypointinthechargecycle,theME4054canbeputintoshutdownmodebyremovingRPROGthusfloatingthePROGpin.Thisreducesthebatterydraincurrenttolessthan2uAandthesupplycurrenttolessthan50uA.Anewchargecyclecanbeinitiatedbyreconnectingtheprogramresistor.Inmanualshutdown,theCHRGpinisinaweakpull-downstateaslongasVCCishighenoughtoexceedtheUVLOconditions.TheCHRGpinisinahighimpedancestateiftheME4054isinundervoltagelockoutmode:
eitherVCCiswithin100mVoftheBATpinvoltageorinsufficientvoltageisappliedtotheVCCpin.
Recharge
Oncethechargecycleisterminated,theME4054continuouslymonitorsthevoltageontheBATpinusingacomparatorwitha2msfiltertime(tRECHARGE).Achargecyclerestartswhenthebatteryvoltagefallsbelow(whichcorrespondstoapproximately80%to90%batterycapacity).Thisensuresthatthebatteryiskeptatornearafullychargedconditionandeliminatestheneedforperiodicchargecycleinitiations.CHRGoutputentersastrongpull-downstateduringrechargecycle
