I.Introduction
Aseveryoneknows,theclassroomteachingisoneofthemostimportantwaysthatthepupilslearnEnglish.Teachersusuallyhaveenoughattentiontotheirverballanguageinteachinglanguage,butinfactlanguageisnotjustcomposedofverbalorvocalform.Studentsdonotonlygetinformationfromteachers’soundsbutalsofromtheteachers’signs,gestures,andanyothermeansrelatedtothesituation,allofwhicharenamedbodylanguagebyresearchers.Bodylanguageiscomposednotonlyofsigns,gestures,markshavingunderstoodmeanings,butalsooffacialexpressions,eyemovements,voiceinflections,postures,bodypositionsandevenclothing.Inschooleducation,bodylanguageplaysapositiveroleincultivatingstudents’characters.For,teachersareusuallyrespected,andfactually,whatorhowtheteacherssayanddowillbepossiblyimitatedbythestudents.
Inshort,teachers’gracefulbodylanguagehelpstoimprovestudents’artistic-appreciationandmoralcharacters.Ifstudentsdevelopawonderfulbodylanguage,anoptimisticandactivefeelingwillbepossiblyformed.Theywillsurelyhaveamoresmoothinterpersonalrelation.Theaffectionofteachers’bodylanguageonthestudentsisreflectednotonlybycreatingagoodexample,butalsoshorteningtheteacher-studentestrangementbywhichamoreharmoniousstudyingatmosphere.Asamatteroffact,teachers’friendlyappearancecangreatlyencouragestudents’studyingenthusiasm.Furthermore,thecharacteristicsoftheoreticandabstractionofknowledgealsorequirethevivid,dramaticandaccessiblegesturestomakeitspecificandfigurative.Asaresult,students’interestismotivatedandtheeffectofteachingisgreatlyimproved.Therearemanyusefulandpropermethodstoachievethegoalandoneofthemisusingbodylanguage.
II.TheNecessityandImportanceofUsingBodyLanguageinEnglishTeaching
A.TheDefinitionofBodyLanguage
WhatisBodyLanguage?
Itisknownasnon-verbalbehavior,whichtransmitsinformationthroughbodygestures,postures,actionsandfacialexpressions.1Inhumanbeings’oralcommunication,peoplealwayshavesomebodymovementswhiletalking,suchasbodypostures,countenances,gesturesandsoon.Theyarealsodeliveringtheinformation,makingasetofsystemwhichisequaltothelanguagesignalone,thenonverbalsocialintercourse.Peopleregardthebehaviorforusingthenonverbalmethodtocommunicateasnonverbalbehaviors.Notonlybywords,bodyLanguageisalsotoshowhowonefeelsbythewayofsitting,standing,walking,etc.Accordingtotheresearchofpsychologists,thesewayscanexpresswhattheverballanguagecannotconveydirectly.CambridgeLearner’sDictionarygivesthedefinitionofbodylanguageas
“thewayyoumoveyourbody,whichshowspeoplewhatyouarefeeling”.2Anykindofbodymovementsorposturescanbereferredasbodylanguagewhichtransmitsmessagestotheobserver.E.T.Hallnamesthiskindoflanguageassilentlanguage,whoarguesthattimetalks,spacetalks,physicalsettingsalsotalk,andone’scultureeventhepitchofone’svoice,tempoandintonationcantellpeoplesomething.3Eachpartofthehumanbody,eitherinmotionorstillness,conveysameaningwhichdependsuponthephysical,social,andculturalcontextoftheaction.Themessagemaybedeliberatelyintended,expressedinsomesortofacceptedcode.Forexample,whenapersonpoints,shakesafist,ornodsthehead,ortheymaybeinvoluntarygesturesofresponse,meansthathewasangeryorsomethingothers.
Thesameconceptioncanbedefinedindifferentwaysaccordingtopeople’sdifferentperceptions.Fromtheabove,bodylanguageisreferredtononverballanguage,silentlanguage,signlanguage,andparalanguage,bodytalk,andkinesicsandsoon.Eachofthesedefinitionsfocusesononeormoreaspectsofit.Theessentialcharacteristicsofthisbodylanguagecanbeconcludedasfollows:
Firstly,it’sameansofcommunicatingideasandfeelings.Secondly,it’snonverbalwithoutanywords,butincludesthemannersofhowwordsaresaid.Thirdly,itreachesitscommunicativepurposenotonlythroughthebodyfunctionitselfsuchasfacialexpressions,gestures,postures,butalsotheobjectsandsettingsaround.Fourthly,itemploysnotonlyearsbutmainlyeyesandothersensesaswell.Fifthly,itinvolvesboththesenderandthereceiverconsciouslyorunconsciously.4Thiskindofnon-speechactcanbeusedwithwordsorusedalone.Duringtheprocessofexchangingandunderstandingbetweentheteachersandthestudents,thishasthespecialvitalsignificance.Soit’snecessarytousebodylanguageinteaching.
Inthisthesis,theauthoremploysbodylanguagetoasystematicmeansofcommunicatingideasorfeelingsthrougheyecontact,gestures,facialexpressions,postures,bodymovements,voiceinflections,messagesviaobjects,timeandsoon.
B.TheNecessityofUsingBodyLanguageinEnglishTeaching
Bodylanguageinteachingisaneffectivewayintermsoflanguageteachingmethods,thiscanbeprovedeitherinlanguageteachingorlanguagetheoryorinpractice.Sobyenforcingthestudyofbodylanguageandmakingitscientificandsystematic,thebodylanguagewillplayamoreimportantroleinrealclassroomteachingandinteachingmethodresearch.
NowmoreandmoreyounglearnersstarttolearnEnglish.ItispopularforthemtolearnEnglishwhentheyarestillveryyoungwhentheyhavelittleornovocabulary.Inthiscircumstance,bodylanguagewillplayanimportantandnecessarypartinteachingiftheteacherwantstoteachthemwell.
Obviously,iftheteachercanusebodylanguagewellinteaching,itwillbelikelytoleadthechildrentosucceedinlanguagelearninganditwillmakethelessonsapleasantexperienceforthem.Forinstance,whenweareteachingthechildrenhowtosayhellowhentheymeettheirfriends,wecanteachthemtosay
“Hello”directly.Meanwhile,withthewordswemayshaketheirhandswithandsmilesonourface.Byobservingthesegestures,theywillsoonknowhowtogreetwhentheymeettheirfriends.Whenweteach
“goodmorningandgoodevening”wecanalsomakegestures,thenthechildrenwillunderstandthatwhat’sthemeaningof
“morning”and
“evening”.Alsotheycanpracticethesewordswiththeirclassmates.
Anotherexample,wecanmakesomegesturesbyusingbodymovementtoteachsomeactionstothechildren.Wemaysitdownandstanduptoexplain
“sit”and
“stand”,andpointoutourfingerstoexplain
“up”and
“down”.Sowecanalsousethegesturelikeapicturetoshowtheactiontothechildren.
Becausethechildrenareveryyoung,theyalllikeplayinggames.Ifteachersmakesomeactivitiesforthechildrenandusebodylanguageasmuchaspossible,forsure,thechildrenwillgetadeepimpression,andtheycanalsorememberwhatistaughttothemverywell.
InordertoevaluatethetrueroleofEnglishintheschoolsystem,itisimportantfortheteacherswhoarenotnativespeakerstoevaluatetheirknowledgeandabilitytouseEnglish.Englishteachingisreallyakeypartoftheschooleducation.Inclasses,bodylanguageplaysasignificantroleincultivatingthestudents’characters.Bodylanguageisalsoanimportantmediathroughwhichpeoplecommunicatewitheachother.Brieflyspeaking,BodyLanguageisexpressingacertainmeaningofakindofsilentlanguagebygesture,mannerandcountenance,whichincludeseyesightlanguage,faciallanguage,handlanguage,bodymovementandsoon.Accordingtoexperts,ournon-verballanguagecommunicatesaboutfiftypercentofwhatwereallymeanwhilewordsthemselvescontributeameresevenpercent.Ourbodiessendoutmessagesconstantlyandoftenwedon’trecognizethatwe’recommunicatingalotmorethanwerealize.Thebehavioralscientiststellusthatalmostthewholebodylanguagecanbeusedasthemannersforhumancommunicationandbeservedfortheteaching.Onceapsychologistmadeanexperimenttoprovethatthetotalresultoftheinformationincludesevenpercentofwriting,thirty-eightpercentoftone,fifty-fivepercentofcountenanceandmovement.ThelinguistMr.Childsays:
“theforeignlanguageteachershouldbeabletoperformanddanceforjoy,makeavividgesture,movementandcountenanceasanactor,shouldnotalwaysbegentleandcultivatedorjuststandstifflyontheplatform.”5BodyLanguagenotonlyreplenishesanddeepenstheverballanguage,butalsotakesagreateffectontheverballanguage.IftheteachercanusetheBodyLanguagefittingly,accuratelyandproficientlytoassisttheteachingintheclassroom
itcannotonlydrawonthestudent’sattention,bringuptheirstudyinterest,butalsoenablethemtheaccurateunderstandingoflanguagecontents,deepentheirimpression.
FromtheaboveweknowthattheuseofbodylanguageinEnglishteachingisnecessaryandpractical.IntheEnglishteaching,bodylanguageisfrequentlyusedtoimprovetheteachingeffectandthestudents’ability.Theywillhelpteachersexpresstheirownideasandthoughtsaccuratelyandlively.
Ⅲ.TheFunctionofUsingBodyLanguageinEnglishTeaching
Inthecommunication,thebodylanguageissubjectedtothecultureandbackground,sowecangettheinformationofaperson,somethingabouthisage,sex,economics,district,socialstatus,culturalaccomplishment,socialintercourseroleandsoon.Usually,theinformationprovidedbybodylanguagecangivemoreinformationthanwords.Becauseithassomefunctions,suchasexplanation,hint,adjustment,emotion,substitution.Sometimes,oneeyesight,onephysicalmovementmaycontainssomemeaningoutofwords.Sothebodylanguage
