401advancednuclearreactorsystemsforhydrogenproduction
Tofacilitateatransitiontoahydrogen-basedeconomy,thelaboratoryisworkingonanumberofprojectscenteredaroundanadvancednuclearreactor.Suchareactorwouldoperateatatemperaturewellinexcessofthereactorsthatarecurrentlyincommercialoperationandwouldbeusedtoeitherpyrolyzenaturalgasorcrackwaterinordertomakehydrogen.Itispredictedthatthishydrogenwillbeneededtofuelbothautomobilesandhomesinthenearfuture.Specificprojectsinthisareaincludedevelopmentofprocessesforseparatingplutoniumandfissionproductsfrommoltensalt,developmentofaprocessforreducingoxidefuelstometallicform,designofhightemperaturenuclearreactors,anddevelopmentofchemicalprocessesforefficientlyconvertinghydrocarbonsorwaterintohydrogen.Thisisawide-ranging,multi-disciplinaryprojectthatrequirestheskillsofnuclear,chemical,andmechanicalengineersaswellasphysicists,chemists,appliedmathematicians,andcomputerscientists.

TheseactivitiesincluderesearchinmanyareasofChemistry,MaterialsScience,MagneticMaterialsandCondensedMatterPhysicsaswellasthedevelopmentofinstrumentationneededforabroadrangeofx-raymicroscopy,scattering,spectroscopy,imaging,andtime-resolvedexperimentsinthesefieldstobeperformedattheAdvancedPhotonSource.Inadditiontoresearchinmanyscientificareas,currentactivitiesarerelatedtodevelopmentofelectronicsforstateoftheartX-raydetectors,X-rayopticsthatallowfocusingatthenanometerscale,novelsynchrotronradiationinstrumentation,andexperimentalequipmentusefulforvariousresearchapplications.
