Bytheendofthe14thcentury,whenNormansandEnglishintermingled,Englishwasoncemorethedominantspeechinthecountry.ButnowitbecamesomethingdifferentfromtheoldAnglo-Saxon.ThestructureofthelanguageremainedEnglish,andthecommonwordswerealmostretained,thoughoftensomewhatmodifiedinform.ButmanytermsemployedbytheNormanswereadoptedintotheEnglishlanguage.ThesituationistypifiedbytheuseoftheEnglish“calf”,“swine”and“sheep”fortheanimalswhentendedbytheSaxonherdsmen,andoftheFrench“veal”,“pork”and“mutton”forthefleshservedatthenoble’stable.

3.TheClassnatureoftheRomance
Thethemeofloyaltytokingandlordwasrepeatedlyemphasizedinromances,asloyaltywasthecorner-stoneoffeudalmorality,withoutwhichthewholestructureoffeudalismwouldcollapse.
