OneofthegreatproblemsofmodernchildhoodisADHD,nowincreasinglyandexpensivelytreatedwithdrugs.YetonestudyafterindicatesthatcontactwithnaturegiveshugebenefitstoADHDchildren.However,wespendmoneyondrugsratherthanongreenplaces.
Thelifeofoldpeopleismeasurablybetterwhentheyhaveaccesstonature.Theincreasingemphasisforthegrowingpopulationofoldpeopleisinqualityratherthanquantityofyears.Andstudyafterstudyfindsthatagardenisthesinglemostimportantthingsinfindingthatquality.
Inwiderandmoredifficultareasoflife,thereisevidencetoindicatethatnaturalsurroundingsimproveallkindsofthings.Evenproblemswithcrimeandaggressivebehaviorarereducedwhenthereiscontactwiththenaturalworld.
DrWilliamBird,researcherformtheRoyalSocietyfrotheProtectionofBirds,statesinhisstudy,“Anaturalenvironmentcanreduceviolentbehaviorbecauseitsrestorativeprocesshelpsreduceangerandimpulsivebehavior.”Wildplacesneedencouragingforthisreason,nomatterhowsmalltheircontribution.
Wetendtolookonnatureconservationassomekindoffavorthathumanbeingsaregrantingtothenaturalworld.Theerrorhereisfartoodeep:
