Today,wegatherheretocelebratethe40thAnniversaryofGuangdongUniversityofForeignStudies.Tobeginwith,Iwouldlike,onbehalfoftheadministration,staffandstudents,toextendmywarmestwelcomeandmostsinceregratitudetoalltheleaders,guestsandalumnifromhomeandabroadforattendingtoday’sgrandceremony.
Onthisspecialoccasion,myheartisfilledwithdeepemotions.InspiteofsomuchI’dliketosay,Ishallonlysharewithyouthreestories,allofwhicharesimple.
First,astoryofourteachers.
In1970,thethenGuangzhouInstituteofForeignLanguagesresumeditsoperation.Atthattime,GuangdongRevolutionCommitteedecidedtoincorporatetheDepartmentofForeignLanguagesofSunYat-senUniversity,theDepartmentofForeignLanguagesandtheDepartmentofForeignTradeofJinanUniversityintoGuangzhouInstituteofForeignLanguages,whichwasestablishedin1965.Fromthatyear,theyoungGIFLboastedalargenumberofmastersinthefieldofforeignlanguagesandliterature,eminentacademicfiguressuchasProfessorLiangZongdai,ProfessorDaiLiuling,ProfessorWangZongyanandourdistinguishedalumniProfessorZengZhaokehavesetgoodexamplesforteachersandstudentsofthisuniversitywiththeirmoralintegrityandacademicachievements.Itisnosurprisethatmanyyoungerscholarsemergedfollowingthesemastersandexcelledintheirfieldofresearch,forexample,ProfessorGuiShichuninpsycholinguisticsandstandardizedexamination,ProfessorGuiCaikuninPhonetics,ProfessorWengXianlianginTranslationStudies,ProfessorLiXiaojuinlanguagetestingandcommunicativemethodologyforforeignlanguageteaching,andProfessorHeZiraninPragmatics.In1990s,anotheroutstandingacademicresearchteamemergedandenteredtheleadingpositioninthewholenation.ThisteamhassuchexcellentscholarsasProfessorHuangJianhuainLexicography,ProfessorQianGuanlianinChinesePragmatics,ProfessorWangChuminginSecondLanguageAcquisition,ProfessorXiaoHuiyuninCommunicativeTeachingMethodology,andProfessorWangGuizheninPhoneticsresearch.Enteringthe21stcentury,weareeverybitaspassionateaboutacademicinnovationaswehadalwaysbeen.ProfessorQianGuanlianbrokenewtrailsforPhilosophyofLanguage,ProfessorZhengLihuawaswidelyrecognizedinthefieldofCross-culturalCommunication,ProfessorZhangYihuaachievedintegratedstudyofthecompilingandresearchofdictionaries,ProfessorWangChumingbecameapioneerintheteachingreformcenteringonimprovingEnglishproficiencythroughwriting,ProfessorRanYongpingcarriedoutpainstakingresearchinPragmatics,ProfessorLuanDongachievedsuccessinhisinterdisciplinaryresearchacrosstheboundariesofLiterature,History,PhilosophyandAesthetics,ProfessorZhongWeiheandhisteamarewidelyacclaimedfortheirimpeccableconferencinginterpretingskills.TheachievementsofthesescholarshaveraisedGuangdongUniversityofForeignStudiestothetopintheteachingandresearchofrelevantdisciplines.
In1980,GuangzhouInstituteofForeignTradewasestablishedalongwiththeimplementationofthereformandopening-uppolicy.Sinceitsestablishment,theInstitutehassetthegoalofcultivatingstudentsthatarestrongbothintheoreticalfoundationsandinpracticalworkandhasshoulderedthetaskofproducingforeigntradeprofessionalsforSouthChina.GIFTboastedanumberofmasterswhoseteachingcanbecharacterizedascase-based.AmongthesescholarsareProfessorQianYiming,expertinimportandexportproceduresandapropagatorofeducationandteachingreforms,ProfessorFangZhenfu,expertinInternationalBusinessLawandInsuranceLawwidelyrecognizedbythelegalstudiescircleofGuangdong,ProfessorLiuDuanlang,whodevotedhislifetoteachingandsetarolemodelofateacher“contentwithteaching,enjoyingteachingandskillfulinteaching”,ProfessorWangYuqi,expertinInternationalTradeClearanceandinnovatorofteachingmethodology,andProfessorShenBoming,excellentacademicfigureintheresearchofWTOissues.
Thepastdecadesince1995sawlargenumbersofhighlyqualifiedteacherswitheducationalbackgroundsinandoutsideChinaandinterdisciplinaryknowledgestructuresjoiningGDUFS.Theseyoungscholarsstandattheforefrontofteachingandresearchandprovetobeastrongsupporttotheproductionoftalentscapableofworkingintheinternationalenvironment.Ournewhopeofmakingincessantachievementsandopeningupabrighterfuturelieswiththeseteachers.
Fortyyearshavepassed,yetwehaveneverfalteredinourteachingandresearch;
wehaveneverhesitatedtoimpartknowledgetoourfuturegenerations.Dearscholars,fellowcolleagues,youhaveunselfishlydevotedyourselvestoChina’seducationundertakingswithyourboundlessloveandfaithfulnesstothecountryandthenation.Youhavecreatedthegloryofouruniversitywithyourboundlessloveforourstudents.Yourteachingandresearch,whicharerichwiththethinkingofdifferentschoolswhileremaininguniqueandpersonalized,isthestrongestforceliftingGDUFStogreaterheights.

Universitiesareoftencomparedtothetreasuretroveofknowledge,theconscienceofthesocietyandthesourceofnewknowledgeaswellasnewtechnologiesfortheeconomicdevelopment.Giventhesincerehopethatthesocietypinsonuniversitiesandthegreatresponsibilitiestheyshoulder,universitiesshouldnaturallyservesocialprogressandcontributetothewell-beingofthemasses.HowcanGDUFSfulfillitsroleandreciprocatethesolicitudeandtrustithasobtainedfromthesocietyanditspeople?
