ThepresentdocumentdefinestherequirementsforsynchronizationontheradiosubsystemofthedigitalTSMcellularandpersonalcommunicationsystemsoperatinginthe3Gband.
ThecontentsofthisTechnicalSpecification(TS)aresubjecttocontinuingworkwithinCWTSWG2.itwillbere-releasedbyCWTSwithanidentifyingchangeofreleasedateandanincreaseinversionnumberasfollows:

1Scope
ThepresentdocumentdefinestherequirementsforsynchronizationontheTSMradiosubsystem.(However,itdoesnotdefinethesynchronizationalgorithmstobeusedintheBaseTransceiverStation(BTS)andUserEquepment(UE).Theseareuptothemanufacturertospecify.)

ThedelayofthereceivedsignalrelativetotheexpectedsignalfromanUEatzerodistanceunderstaticchannelconditionswithzerotimingadvance.Thisisaccuratetoonestep(k/8chipperiods,k=1,2…8,whichisbroadcastedinBCCH).Forexample,foranUEwithapropagationdelayofPsteps,butwithatimingadvanceofTsteps,thetimingoffsetwillbePTquantizedtotheneareststep.
2Generaldescriptionofsynchronizationsystem
Thisclausegivesageneraldescriptionofthesynchronizationsystem.Detailedrequirementsaregiveninclauses3to6.
TheBTSsendssignalsontheDwPTStoenabletheUEtosynchronizeitselftotheBTSandifnecessarycorrectitsfrequencystandardtobeinlinewiththatoftheBTS.ThesignalssentbytheBTSforthesepurposesare:
a)DownlinkPilotTimeSlot;
b)Midamble.
Thetimingsoftimeslots,TDMAframes,TCHframesandcontrolchannelframesareallrelatedtoacommonsetofcounterswhichruncontinuouslywhethertheUEandBTSaretransmittingornot.Thus,oncetheUEhasdeterminedthecorrectsettingofthesecounters,allitsprocessesaresynchronizedtothecurrentservingBTS.
TheUErandomlyselectsoneoftheeightpossibleSYNC1sequeceofthatcellandtimesitstransmissionsontheUpPTStotheBTSinlinewiththosereceivedfromtheBTS.TheBTSsendstoeachUEa"

parameter(TA)ontheP-FACHaccordingtotheperceivedpropagationdelayofUpPTS.TheUEadvancesitstimingbythisamountonthetransmissionofRACH,withtheresultthatsignalsfromdifferentUE'
sarrivingattheBTSandcompensatedforpropagationdelay.Thisprocessiscalled"
establishmentofsynchronisation"
.Aftertheestablishmentofsynchronisation,theL1commandSSisusedtomaintainthesynchronisation.Forineachuplinktimeslot,themidambleforeachUEisdifferenct,theBTScanestimatethetimingshiftbymeasuringthemidamblefieldofeachUE.ThentheBTScansignaltheUEtheSychronisationShift(SS)commandtoenabletheUEtoproperlyadjustitstransmissiontiming.

4Timingoftransmittedsignals
ThetimingofsignalstransmittedbytheUEandBTSaredefinedinGSM

TheUEcanusethetimingofreceiptofthesynchronizationbursttosetupitstimebasecountersasfollows:

TheBTSshalluseasinglefrequencysourceofabsoluteaccuracybetterthan0.05
ppmforbothRFfrequencygenerationandclockingthetimebase.ThesamesourceshallbeusedforallcarriersoftheBTS.
5.2Timebasecounters
ItisoptionalwhetherthetimebasecountersofdifferentBTS'
saresynchronizedtogether.
5.3InternalBTScarriertiming
ThechannelsofdifferentcarrierstransmittedbyaBTSshallbesynchronizedtogether,i.e.controlledbythesamesetofcounters.Thetimingdifferencebetweenthedifferentcarriersshallbelessthan1chipperiods,measuredattheBTSantenna.
5.4InitialTimingadvanceestimation
WhentheBTSdetectsaSYNC1transmissiononUpPTS,itshallmeasurethedelayofthissignalrelativetotheexpectedsignalfromanUEatzerodistanceunderstaticchannelconditions.Thisdelay,calledthetimingadvance,shallberoundedtothenearest1/8chipperiodandincludedinaresponsefromtheBTSforestablishmento
