AnotherfeatureoftheA8flagshipisthealuminumAudiSpaceFrame(ASF),whichinthislatestevolutionincludesmanyhigh-strengthcomponentswhichhavecontributedtoincreasethetorsionalstiffnesby25%.
Thestructureweightsabout40percentlessthanacomparablesteeloneandiscoupledwithaluminumbodypanels.
Greatattentionwaspaidtoaerodynamics,witharesultingdragcoefficientof0.26.
TheinteriorfeaturesanimprovedMMIoperatingsystem,withatouchpadinterface,combinedwithadvanceddriverassistanceandsafetysystems.
Thenewtechnologiesincludeanightvisionassistwithmarkingofdetectedpedestrians,Audisideassistwhichdetectslane-change,theAudipresensesafetysystemandaspeedlimitdisplay.
AtlaunchthenewA8willbeavailablewithtwoengines,a4.2FSIwith273kW(372hp)anda4.2TDIwith258kW(350hp).Theywillbefollowedbya3.0TDIwith184kW(250hp)andbyanothervariantwith150kW(204hp)andfront-wheeldrivewhichwillhaveanaveragefuelconsumptionofonly6.0litersper100km(39.20USmpg).
Thefuelconsumptionhasdroppedby13to22percent,thankstotechnologiesliketherecuperationsystemandinnovativethermalmanagement.
ThenewA8willarriveatdealershipsinearly2010.

ThenewA8underscorestheleadingpositionmaintainedbyAudiinthefieldofautomotivedesign.Representingthecuttingedgeinmanyinnovativetechnologies,theA8indicatesthisrolethroughnewandprogressivedesignelements.
5137mm(16.85ft)inlength,witha2992mm(9.82ft)wheelbase,1949mm(6.39ft)inwidthand1460mm(4.79ft)inheight–thenewluxurysedanexceedsinlengthandwidthbothitspredecessoranditscompetitors.
Itsheight,however,remainsbelowthatofitsrivalsinGermany–theproportionsfollowthedynamicline.
Thesingle-frameradiatorgrilleisframedbyachromeedgeandpresentsanewdesign–sculptured,three-dimensionalandrichindetails.
Withangularuppercorners,itisneatlyintegratedinthefrontsection,whiletheprominent,horizontalchromebracesemphasizethevehiclewidth.
ThesideviewofthenewAudiA8alsogivestheimageofconcentratedandforward-thrustingpower.TypicallyfortheAudiline,thevehiclelinemakesuptwo-thirdsoftheheight,withtheremainingthirdfallingtothegreenhouse.
Fromthesingle-framegrillAudi'
scharacteristicTornadolinerunsasalightedgejustbeneaththewindowsill.
Thelinecontinuescloseabovethewheelarches,givingtheA8apowerfulappearanceontheroad.
Thesurfacesbelowthetornadolineinterprettheinterplayoflightandshadow,ofconvexityandconcavity,andarestatementofseriousnessandtimelesselegance.
Proceedingdownwards,thesurfacesareframedbytherisingdynamiclinerunningabovethesidesills.
Largewheels–from17to21inchesindiameter–fillthewheelarchespulledoutwide.
Atthereartheseparationedgegivesanimpressionofsleekness,whichfurtherreinforcestheimpressivelysculpturedsurfaces.Achromestripunderlinesthewidthofthesedan,terminatinginadiffuser.
BodyStructure
Asitspredecessors,thenewAudiA8hasanall-aluminiumbodymountedonanaluminumspaceframe.Thestructure,namedAudiSpaceFrame(ASF)wasfirstintroducedin1994withthefirstgenerationAudiA8.
Inthelatestevolution,tThealuminumpanels–suchastheroofpanelsandthesidepanels–arejoinedbyfrictionconnections.
Dependingontheirtasks,thecomponentsoftheASFbodyfullydifferinshapeandcross-sectionalarea.
Forexample,theA-pillarnodesofthenewA8–oneof25castingsinthebody–interconnectthelongitudinalmember,thesill,theomegacross-member,thewindshieldcrossmember,theroofframeandthesuspensionstrutmount.
Thelateralroofframe,ontheotherhand,isformedbyasingleextrudedsection;
itscross-sectionchangesflexiblyfromtheA-pillartotheC-pillar.
Audihassubstantiallyincreasedthestrengthofthehigher-strengthbodycomponentsinthenewA8,therebysignificantlyreducingbothmaterialthicknessandweight.
Oneofthekeysforthisisanovelcompositematerialforthealuminumpanels.
Theuseofthisnew,high-strengthaluminumalloyaloneenabledaweightsavingof6.5kilograms(14.33lb).
Thestatictorsionalstiffnesshasincreasedby25percentcomparedwiththepredecessor.
Intermsoflightweightquality—therelationshipbetweenweight,torsionalstiffnessandsize—thebodyachievedanimprovementof20percent.
Interior
TheinteriorofthenewAudiiswider,moreairyandmorespaciousthanitspredecessor.Itssalientelementisthe“wrap-around”–acircumferentialcurveforminganelegantbeltlineasonayacht.
Thelargecurveintegratesthesleekandlowinstrumentpanel.Itsneat&
tidyfrontisshapedlikeagentlewave.
Thelarge,roundinstrumentsareclearlydelineated.Thedriverinformationsystem(DIS),whichservesasafullyfledgedinformationandcontrolcenter,hasanewlayout
.Itscenterdisplayhasincreasedtoa7-inchdiagonal,showingallfunctionsinaneasilyunderstandableconcept.
ThecentertunneliswideandevenlyinclinedandcontainsthecontrolpanelfortheautomaticairconditioningandtheterminaloftheMMIcontrolandmultimediasystem.
Itformsaclearlyorganizedtouch&
feelarrangementofthreezones,oneofwhichisreservedforaudio.Thedriver’swristontheselectorleverofthe8-speedtiptronic,asymmetricallylocatedonthecentertunnel,leavingthehandateasetotouchandturnswitches.
Instandbymode,themonitoroftheMMIsystemisrecessedintheinstrumentpanel.Switchedon,itmovesupwardsinanelegantcurve,nicelysettingthesceneforthesystemstart.
Thelargemonitorwithits8-inchdiagonalisextremelyflat.Itsdisplayareaisdividedintothreeinformationzones,whilethemenucontrolsystemfollowsafurtherimprovedandintuitivelogic.Alltopicsarepresentedinelegant,three-dimensionalgraphics.
Thelargecontrolsandbuttonsareoptionallyavailablewithaluminumsurfaces.Manyswitchesgleaminhigh-glossblack,andallfrequentlyusedpartsarecoveredbyanewkindoftopcoatmakingthemextremelyscratch-resistant.
Thelargedecorativeinlayseachconsistoftwoparts:
thebottomelementscomeinstandardhighlypolishedblack,thetoponesinwalnutbrown,whilethewholeisaccentuatedbyfinechromestrips.
BrushedaluminumandfinewoodsareoptionallyavailablefromAudi.Allcomponentsfeatureuncompromisinglypreciseworkmanshipandminimalgaps.
Audioffersfivebasiccolorsfortheinterior,andthreeshadesfortherooflining.
CustomerscanchoosefromtwoAudidesignselectionsinspecialcolorsthatintegratemanyluxuriousequipmentfeatures.Audialsooffersseveralleatherpackages,anAlcantarapackageandtheextendedaluminumlookintheinterior.
Lighting
ThenewheadlightshavexenonplusunitsandfullLEDheadlights,atechnologyfirstintroducedbyAudiwiththeR8.
Theadaptivelightsystemcontrolstheswivelingmoduleswhilethenewall-weatherlightintegratedintotheheadlightsreplacesthefoglights.Theirtraditionallocationintheairintakesisnowoccupiedbytheradarsensorsoftheoptionaladaptivecruisecontrolwithstop&
gofunction.
Thecontinuousheadlightrangecontrol,afurtherdevelopmentofthehigh-beamassistant.Avideocameramountedinfrontoftheinsidemirrorrecognizesothervehiclesbytheirlights.Acomputeradaptsthevehicle’sownlightthroughaslidingrangethatguaranteesthemaximumpossibleillumination.
Theheadlightcontrolunitisconnectedwiththenavigationsystem,whichanalyzestherouteaheadandrelaysthedatatothelightcomputertoactivatehighwaylightingwithitsextendedrangewhilestillontheramptothehighway,forexample.
Beforeenteringanintersection,thesystemactivatesthecorneringlight,whichprovideswider-angleilluminationandthusenhancessafety.
ThefullLEDheadlightsgivethesedananunmistakableappearancebothindaylightandatnight.
Theirrevolutionaryopticsmeanadeparturefromthelarge,tubularlightmodulescommonlyusedtoday.
Thelowbeamscomprisetenindividualmodulesforminganarcsituatedbelowthewing-shapedchromecontourknownasthe“wing.”Justbelowthisisanotherarcof22whiteand22yellowLEDsforthedaytimerunninglightsandtheturnsignals.
Theirthickwalltechnologymakesthemappearfromtheoutsideashomogenous,continuousstripsoflight.
