Ellington"screativegiftsweregenuineandvast,butformuchofhislifehedidreceivecrucialassistancenotonlyfromtheinvolvementofhisband,butfromanactualday-in,day-outcollaborator.In1938hemetBillyStrayhorn,ayoungpianist-composerwhowasimmediatelybroughtintotheducalfold.StrayhornbecameEllington"salteredego,contributingscorestothebandbutfunctioningevenmoreimportantlyasasilentpartner,completingpiecesEllingtonleftunfinished,reworkingothersandactingasall-purposecomposer—sometimescredited,moreoftennot.
EllingtonprovidedStrayhornwithfinancialsecurity,artisticrespectandthecreativemediumoftheEllingtonband.Throughouttheirpartnership—whichlasteduntilStrayhorn"sdeathin1967—theyneverhadacontract.Ellingtonsimplypaidallcreativeequalandfriends,describinghimas"myfavoritehumanbeing",Strayhorn,ahomosexualbonvivant,brilliantbutself-effacing,letEllingtontakeboththegloryandthestrainofstardom,whileherelievedsomeoftheartisticpressurewithatalentcomparabletotheleader"sown.
