Abstract:
ThispaperintroducesCharlesDickens’painfulchildhoodbriefly,andthenanalysesjuvenileimageinOliverTwist,GreatExpectationandDavidCopperfieldincomparisonwithCharlesDickens’painfulgrown-upexperience.TheanalysisofmiserablechildhoodimageandstrugglingjuvenileimageshowthelimitofCharlesDickens’humanism.Thenitwillcriticizebourgeoisie’sselfishnessandhypocrisyintheVictorianAge.

摘要:
本文简介查尔斯·狄更斯不幸的童年经历,结合着作者成长经历对他的作品《雾都孤儿》、《远大前程》、《大卫·科波菲尔》这三部作品当中的儿童形象及青少年形象进行分析。
通过对少年儿童不幸的遭遇和经历以及青少年的奋斗的分析,勾勒出查尔斯·狄更斯的人文主义的局限性,进而来批判维多利亚时期资产阶级社会的自私和伪善.

InEnglishliterature,theVictorianAge(1832-1868)isaveryimportantpart.Ofthethirty-sixyears,thefirstfourteenwerefilledwithunrest,alarm,misery,andtheycontrastwiththegrowingprosperityandgeneralgoodfeelingofthesucceedingtwenty-twoyearswhenEnglish,havingcommittedherselftoindustrialismandfreetrade,becomeforatime“theworkshopoftheworld”.
Duringthisperiodoftime,manygreatchangestookplaceinadministrations.SincetheIndustrialRevolution,theclassstructureinEnglishsocietyhadundergoneradicalchanges.Theindustrialcapitalistsbegantoplayamoreimportantroleandviedforpoliticalpowerwiththeoldaristocracy.Howeverwiththedevelopmentofcapitalism,therearoseapowerfulworkingclass.Theconflictbetweenlaborandcapitalwasforsometimethesameasthestrugglebetweenthefeudalandthebourgeoisclasses.Butfromthethirtiesofthe19thcentury,thestrugglebetweentheworkersandcapitalistsbecamethefundamentalcontradictioninEnglishsociallife.
Theignorance,incapacity,andheartlessnessofmanyoftheseemployeesmovedDickensandotherwriterstobittersatire;butthenewpolicywasachangeintherightdirection.Thenewlaw,thoughanadvanceupontheoldmethodsofdealingwithpauperism,wasenforcedwithagrimBenthamiterigidityandimpersonalitywhichcausedneedlesssufferingandhumiliation.ThepictureinOliverTwist(1838)isofthetypicalworkhouseintheyearsbeforeexperienceandprotestsintroducedamelioratingmodificationsintheadministrationofthelaw.
Amidthemultitudeofsocialandpoliticalforcesofthisgreatage,fourthingsstandoutclearly.First,thelongstruggleoftheAnglo-Saxonsforpersonallibertyisdefinitelysettled,anddemocracybecomestheestablishedorderoftheday.Second,becauseitisanageofdemocracy,itisanageofpopulareducation,ofreligioustolerance,ofgrowingbrotherhood,andofprofoundsocialunrest.Third,becauseitisanageofdemocracyandeducation,itisanageofcomparativepeace.Fourth,theVictorianAgeisespeciallyremarkablebecauseofitsrapidprogressinalltheartsandsciencesandinmechanicalinventions.
Allthesematerialthings,aswellasthegrowthofeducation,havetheirinfluenceuponthelifeofapeople,anditisinevitablethattheyshouldreactuponitsproseandpoetry;whenthesenewthingsshallbylongusehavebecomefamiliarascountryroads,orhavebeenreplacedbynewerandbetterthings,thentheyalsowillhavetheirassociationsandmemories.

InVictorianAgeoftenseclassstruggleappearedanewliterarytrend—criticalrealism.Englishcriticalrealismofthe19thcenturyflourishedinthefortiesandintheearlyfifties.Thecriticalrealistsdescribedwithmuchvividnessandcriticizedthecapitalistsystemfromademocraticviewpoint.ThegreatestEnglishrealistofthetimewasCharlesDickens.“Withstrikingforceandtruthfulness,hecreatespicturesofbourgeoiscivilization,describingthemiseryandsufferingofthecommonpeople”(Liu118),especiallythechildren’ssufferingsuchasPip,DavidCopperfieldandOliverTwist.
