@#@a）determinethestockstructureofcommonminkewhale,andinparticulartoinvestigatewhetherornotthe“W”stockexistsandifsotoestimatemixingratesbetween“O”and“W”stocks,andb）determinethefeedingecologyofthecommonminkewhaleintheNorthPacific.TheInternationalWhalingCommission’sScientificCommittee（IWC/SC）carriedoutaworkshopinFebruary2000toreviewdataandresultsofJARPN.JARPNIIstartedwithtwofeasibilitysurveysin2000and2001.Thefirstfullsurveystartedin2002.TheobjectivesoftheJARPNIIarethefollowing:

@#@a）feedingecologyandecosystemstudies（preyconsumptionbycetaceans,preypreferenceofcetaceans,ecosystemmodeling）;@#@b）monitoringenvironmentalpollutantincetaceansandthemarineecosystem（patternofaccumulationofpollutantsincetaceans,bioaccumulationprocessofpollutantsthroughthefoodchain,relationshipsbetweenchemicalpollutantsandcetaceanhealth）,andc）stockstructureoflargewhales（commonminkewhale,Bryde’swhale,seiwhaleandspermwhale）.TheIWC/SCiscurrentlyplanningareviewofthedataandresultscollectedbyJARPNIIinitssixfirstyears（2002-2007）.ScientificcontributionofJARPN/JARPNIIScientificcontributionofJARPN/JARPNIIhasbeenmadeavailableindifferentforms,asscientificdocumentsfortheIWC/SCmeetings,aspublicationsinpeerreviewedjournals,andasoralpresentationsatscientificsymposiums.Table1showsthenumberofIWC/SCdocuments,peer-reviewedpublicationsandoralpresentationsatscientificsymposiumbasedonJARPN/JARPNIIsample/data,byyear.IWC/SCdocumentsIntheperiod1994-2008atotalof127documentswerepresentedtoannualandintersessionalmeetingsoftheIWC/SC,withanannualaverageof8.5documents.Severalofthesedocumentswerepreparedbyorincollaborationwithforeignscientists.DocumentswerepresentedmainlyattheRMP,IAandSPsub-committees,whichdealmainlywithmanagementofwhales.PeerreviewedpublicationsThenumberofpeer-reviewedpapersmadeintheperiod1994-2008is51,withanannualaverageof3.4documents.Thesecontributionshavebeenmadenotonlyinthefieldofwhalemanagementbutalsointhefieldofwhalenaturalsciences.Againseveralofthesepaperswerepreparedbyorincollaborationwithforeignscientists.OralpresentationsatsymposiumThenumberoforalpresentationsmadeatscientificsymposiumintheperiod1994-2008is120,withanannualaverageof8.0documents.Thesecontributionshavebeenmadenotonlyinthefieldofwhalemanagementbutalsointhefieldofwhalenaturalsciences.TitlesandcontentsofsuchpresentationscanbefoundintheannualprogressreportoftheInstituteofCetaceanResearch（ICR）.ThelistofIWC/SCdocumentsandpeer-reviewedpapersderivedfromJARPN/JARPNIIisshownintheAppendix1.ThelistisorderedaccordingtothethreemainresearchobjectivesofJARPNII.Anasteriskindicatesthosepaperspublishedinpeer-reviewedjournals.OtherscientificcontributionJARPN/JARPNmaterialhasbeenusedin:
