DeathintheWoodsispresentedasafirst-personnarrativebyanunreliablenarrator,whotellsthestoryofanoldwoman,Mrs.Grimes.Itwasaflashbacknarrative.Theboywhotoldthestorygatheredallthefactshecouldfromthetimehewitnessedthedeathoftheoldwomanwhenhewasayoungboyuptothetimewhenhegrewupasamanandunderstoodtherealpointofthestory.Mrs.Grimeslivesontheedgeofsocietyandsurvivesbysellingeggsandusingtheproceedstobuyfoodforherself,hersmallfamilyandtheanimalsinhercare.Herhusbandisconsideredtobeahorsethief,andthecoupleislookeddownonbyothers.ShewasabandonedbyhermotherandgrewupasanindenturedservantandreceivedinappropriateattentionsfromherGermanmaster.JakeGrimes,whohelpshergetridofherGermanmasterandhiswifebecameherhusband.However,marriageisnottheendofhermiserablelifebutthebeginningofmoretorturousoppression.Mrs.GrimesandJakeGrimehaveasonandadaughter,butthedaughterdiedinchildhood.Theirsongrowsuptobelikehisfather.BothofthemverballyabusedMrs.GrimesandtreatedherinamannersimilartothewaytheGermanandhiswifehadtreatedher.Onthelastdayofherlife,Mrs.Grimeswalksintotowntotradesomeeggsandbuysomesupplies.Onherwayhome,sheleavestheroadandwalksthroughthewoods.Onthisshortcutshefindsaplacewhereshesitsdowntohavearest.Whilesittingdown,shedies.Thenarrationofthestorywasdividedintofiveparts.Thefirstparttalksabouttheoldwomanwhousedtovisitthetowntogetthefoodsheneedsinexchangeforthechickeneggsshebrings.Ittellsaboutherexperienceingreatdistressandpainfulstorybeforeshegetsmarried.Thesecondparttalksabouttheoldwoman’smiserablelifeaftergettingmarried.Thethirdpart,themainpartofthewholestory,talksaboutthedeathoftheoldwomaninwoods.Theforthpartisabouttheresponseofotherpeoplefortheoldwoman’sdeathafterhercorpsewasfounded.Thelastpartisaboutthenarrator’sownideafortheevent.
