therewaslittlecleanwaterandnotenoughfood.Healthcarewaspoorandpeopleinthevillagehadalifeexpectancyof38years.AmyandNealhadnoqualificationsintourismorhealthcarebuytheyhadcommonsense,enthusiasmanddetermination.Theytalkedtothevillagersabouttheirplantocreateasmallbeachresort,whichwouldprovideemploymentforpeoplesothattheycouldhaveabetterlife.Theresponsefromthevillagerswasextremelypositive.Theironlyquestionwas:

Thecouplesettoworkonabeachlodge,buildingbeachhutsfromlocalmaterialsandemployingpeoplefromthearea.Oncethelodgewascomplete,theysetupacharitablefoundationcalledNEMA,whichreceived5%ofthemoneymade.Thismoneywasusedtocreatecleanwaterpoints,fundhealthcareprojects,buildtwoprimaryschoolsandsupportconservationprojects—ithelpedtoimprovethelivesofthousandsofpeople.“Wewantedtoshowtheworldthepoweroftourism,thatitcouldbeavehicleforchange,”saysAmy.
Itisn’teasytogettothisvillage.It’snotatypicalpackageholidaywithairportpick-upsanddrop-offs.There’snopublictransport,either.Thenearestisabout260kilometresawayandoncethere,youhavetotakeaboatorgoonathree-hourcarjourneyalongbadlymaintainedroads.Butthevillagelodgeisworththeeffort.Todaythelodgehasninebeachhuts,withbeautifulseaviews.Therearenooverpricedgiftshopsandothertouristtraps.It’stheperfectplacetotaketimeout,escapethecrowdsandsoakupthesun.Visitorscanseethesights—exploretheislandnearbywithatourguide,goscuba-divingorobserveAfricanwildlife.Butthehighlightformanyisgettingtoknowpeopleinthevillage,takingpartinfestivalsandlearningaboutNEMA’swork.“Peoplewhostaywithusoftencomeforthedivingorthebeach,”saysAmy,“butit’sthecommunitiesthatreallyblowthemaway.”
